Runway to Red Carpet: Ladies in Lace and Cues from ’80s Prom Queens

-------

When it comes to fashion, the red carpet can often be filled with the same old, same old. But now and again, some bold celebrities shake things up with experimental, next-level looks. Here’s what’s feeling fresh this week.

Zoe Saldana Guardians of the Galaxy Los Angeles Louis Vuitton Resort 2015From classic hits to updated takes on the past, a wealth of noteworthy wares walked down the red carpet this week. A handful of stars opted for frocks with lace or insets. Cate Blanchett and Zoe Saldana chose looks with all-over lace. Saldana attended the L.A. premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy in an ensemble from the Louis Vuitton Resort ’15 catwalk on Monday night, and Blanchett stepped out in a white lace-covered cocktail dress with butterfly sleeves from Elie Saab’s Spring ’13 Haute Couture offering for a SK-II beauty event in Shanghai the following evening. In Hollywood, Diane Kruger turned up at the Fox All-Star party in a black Marios Schwab Resort ’15 jumpsuit with a lace keyhole cutout, which was a popular detail for the season.

A surprising, yet decidedly fresh trend this week was the contemporary take on the 80s prom dress. Perhaps one too many Sixteen Candles reruns were the cause for inspiration, but several celebs seemed to be channeling retro prom queens. Rachel McAdams opted for a one-shouldered Zuhair Murad Fall ’14 Haute Couture jewel-toned number with a modern interpretation of a bustle at the hip for the New York premiere of A Most Wanted Man. Kylie Minogue went for the shimmer-effect, donning a gold metallic Blumarine Fall ’14 frock for a photo call for The Voice in Sydney. Selena Gomez decided on a more literal approach, layering piles of tulle over a Dior Spring ’14 cocktail dress for the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation gala in France. It appears there are still a few lessons we can learn from the decade of big hair, sleeves, and skirts.

Runway to Red Carpet: A Saint Laurent Special and a Lady in Plaid

-------

Lily CollinsFrom the Teen Choice Awards to movie premieres, red-carpet-watchers had a lot to keep them busy this week. Saint Laurent was a popular choice with the weekend crowd, with several A-listers attending Saturday’s events in all-black looks by the Parisian powerhouse. At Disney’s D23 Expo, Angelina Jolie looked the epitome of casual elegance in a light wool sweater paired with tailored pants and ankle boots, all by Saint Laurent. That same evening, Rachel McAdams continued her About Time premiere circuit with a screening in Munich, walking the red carpet in a quietly sexy dress from Saint Laurent’s Resort ’14 offering. In L.A., Miley Cyrus played up her rocker image at the Teen Choice Awards, opting for a Saint Laurent see-through blouse and buckled-up skirt from Fall ’13‘s grunge-inspired collection.

Lily Collins (above) is quickly becoming one to watch on the red carpet, and had several strong sartorial picks this week. Among her best was a white cutout Cushnie et Ochs Resort ’14 sheath, which she wore to the L.A. premiere of her film The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones on Monday. The following evening, Diane Kruger put a ladies-who-lunch spin on tartan, donning a midi from Carven’s Resort ’14 collection at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Installation Luncheon. Finished off with barely there gray sandals and a side ponytail, the actress made plaid look effortlessly chic.

Runway to Red Carpet: Suited Stars and a Musical Hem

Rachel McAdamsAlthough this proved to be a quieter week on the red carpet than most, those who did hit the town came out strong. As Beyoncé’s world tour pushes on, we’ve continued to envy her custom-made wardrobe. On Saturday, she added Gucci to the designer lineup, with a lust-worthy top-and-pants ensemble inspired by the Spring ’12 collection. Rachel McAdams looked stunning (as usual) at Thursday night’s London premiere of her film About Time. The copper-coiffed star chose a long-sleeve, floor-grazing Roksanda Ilincic gown from the Resort ’14 collection. It was nipped at the waist with an iridescent belt.

On-screen mother-daughter duo Amanda Seyfried and Sharon Stone continued their Lovelace-premiere circuit with Monday night’s L.A. screening. Seyfried shimmered in a metallic brown-and-gold Gucci mini while Stone opted for a sharp all-black Salvatore Ferragamo ensemble, pairing tailored pants with a tuxedo jacket and leather loafers. That same evening, across the pond, Chloë Moretz traded in her superhero cape for a striped Viktor & Rolf suit from the Resort ’14 lineup at the photo call for her film Kick-Ass 2. The 16-year-old finished off the look with a pair of black Mary Janes, which gave the grown-up outfit a fresh, youthful touch.

Laura Carmichael—or, as Downton Abbey fans might know her, Lady Edith—also embraced a playful look in L.A. On Tuesday, she wore a black Moschino Cheap and Chic shift with a piano-key hemline to PBS History’s photo call. We’re not sure the Dowager Countess of Grantham would have approved, but we sure do.

Yea, Nay, or Eh: Rachel McAdams, Overexposed?

-------

OK, we know it’s the dog days of summer, but how much skin do you really need to show to be in? Earlier this week, Diane Kruger came close to exposing her derriere in a dramatic Atelier Versace number, and last night, at the New York premiere ofThe Time Traveler’s Wife, Rachel McAdams’ white jersey dress plunged almost down to her navel. We’re not big fans of frocks that require double-stick tape, but what do you think? Is McAdams overdoing it or just secure in her own skin?
