Rag & Bone’s Super DIY

Since they were first implemented in 2011, Rag & Bone/JEANS’ guerilla DIY campaigns—in which models photograph themselves while wearing the brand’s smart urban duds—have featured everyone from Miranda Kerr and Lily Aldridge to Candice Swanepoel and Carolyn Murphy. This season, designers Marcus Wainwright and David Neville have embraced fashion’s renewed obsession with nineties supers, tapping Erin O’Connor and Kirsty Hume as their Fall ’13 faces. The ads rolled out today, and it seems Hume went above and beyond, sending Rag & Bone not only some personal snaps, but a DIY video that she shot with a little help from her friends. Lensed in Topanga Canyon, California, the sun-drenched short debuts here, exclusively on Style.com.

Pete Doherty Wants to Sell You Rusty Mustard Tins and Poems in a Bottle, Not Ready-to-Wear, at His New Shop, “Rag & Bone”

Pete Doherty Rocker and former Kate Moss flame Pete Doherty—whom The Guardian describes as looking like a “damp, overworked cherub”—has opened a shop in Camden Market, where he’ll sell the bric-a-brac collected over the course of a rock ’n’ roll life. Its name: Doherty Martin & Co.: Rag & Bone Collection.

Borderline copyright infringement? Probably not. More likely that Doherty and the design duo of David Neville and Marcus Wainwright are both drawing on the British idiom—a rag-and-bone man is a junk collector. (The great Irish poet Yeats, too, once wrote of “the foul rag and bone shop of the heart.”) In any case, even though Rag & Bone moved their men’s show to London last season, it’s doubtful that Doherty’s venture poses much of a threat to their brand. And in Doherty’s defense, his is the likelier shop if you’re looking for a rag and/or a bone: Its stock comprises rusty mustard tins, old magazine clippings, and Doherty-penned poems in a bottle. David Neville and Marcus Wainwright had no comment on the quasi coincidence.

Rag & Bone's Fall '13 Campaign 1Rag & Bone's Fall '13 Campaign 2Hot on the heels of their London Collections: Men debut, Rag & Bone‘s Marcus Wainwright and David Neville unveil their very first menswear campaign, as well as their third series of womenswear ads. Lensed by Glen Luchford on the streets of New York, the black-and-white Fall ’13 snaps feature Michael Pitt (of Boardwalk Empire fame) and french actress Léa Seydoux. Aiming to capture “real moments,” the designers, whose previous two campaigns starred Kate Moss, gave their Fall faces no direction. “The premise was simply them in Rag & Bone, doing whatever came naturally,” said Neville. 2013 CFDA/ Vogue Fashion Fund Finalists

“I think my stomach dropped to the floor and all the blood rushed out of my hands and my feet,” said Misha Nonoo of her reaction when she learned she was one of the ten 2013 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists. The emerging-designer initiative invited program alums and industry insiders, including Thakoon Panichgul, Prabal Gurung, Pamela Love, and Max Osterweis, to Rag & Bone’s Meatpacking District studio last night, where the names of this year’s top picks were revealed. Now in its tenth year, the program will announce the 2013 winners—who will receive financial support and mentoring—at a Gala in L.A., on November 11.

This year’s finalists—Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of Public School, Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard of Veronica Beard, Marc Alary of Marc Alary Jewelry, Tim Coppens, Todd Snyder, Misha Nonoo of Nonoo, Shimon Ovadia and Ariel Ovadia of Ovadia & Sons, Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin of Tome, Commodore Jason Jones of Parabellum, and Juan Carlos Obando—were selected by a group of influencers, which included new judges Marcus Wainwright and David Neville of Rag & Bone. Toasting American Fashion in Beijing

“We went to the Great Wall and rode down the toboggan twice!” exclaimed Marchesa designer Keren Craig during a party that Chinese retail impresarios Silas Chou and his daughter, Veronica Chou, hosted at their Beijing residence on Friday. While her design partner—Georgina Chapman—was absent, Craig was joined by Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, and Rag & Bone’s David Neville and Marcus Wainwright, all of whom had traveled to the Far East as part of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund’s Americans in China initiative. Launched in 2012, the program aims to introduce a cross section of American design to the buoyant Chinese market.

Earlier in the day, the trio of U.S. brands presented their Fall ’13 ranges at the restored Ming Dynasty City Wall in the heart of old Beijing. Each collection was reassembled on a coterie of Chinese models, including Liu Wen, Xiao Wen, and Ming Xi.

“These designers represent the diversity of American fashion, from contemporary wear to high fashion and the red carpet,” said CFDA CEO Steven Kolb. “For all of us, China is this great unknown market,” he added, noting that over the next five years, the CFDA will expand its global programming.
