Anna Bauer Goes Backstage

-------

Kate Moss by Anna Bauer

In the fall of 2007—long before backstage was a thing and the flash of a camera was as ubiquitous behind the scenes as it is on the runway—German photographer Anna Bauer received an assignment from The Daily and road-tripped her way from London to Milan to Paris, shooting models, stylists, and a host of other fashion types along the way. She used a large-format Polaroid camera and captured the industry’s central figures in spontaneous form—flagging down designers such as Raf Simons and models like Kate Moss (above) and Raquel Zimmermann (below) during quiet moments and approaching them with boldness, trepidation, and sometimes total naiveté. “When I shot David Sims, I didn’t know who he was,” she recalled at the launch of her book, Backstage, last February. The results are eye-catching—a collection of raw, oft-revealing black-and-white portraits of the people who make the shows run.

This Thursday, Bauer will show the Polaroids—many of which first debuted in Backstage—en masse for the first time at the Loewe store in Madrid. “It’s a selection of about eighty,” said Bauer of the images, which include stills of everyone from Alber Elbaz to Iris Apfel to Juergen Teller. “I’m really happy because the show is going to give them another life,” she added. The earliest Polaroids on view were taken when the project began in 2007 (a young Agyness Deyn, a sunglasses-clad Karl Lagerfeld), while the most recent, Olivier Rousteing’s, for instance (“He doesn’t know he’s in there, because I didn’t know how to get in touch with him!” exclaimed Bauer), were taken just over a year ago.

Bauer said she has thought about shooting another group of people, like musicians or athletes (“just another extreme kind of group,” she mused) in the same style. But, she reasoned, “It could never be like this. I think that’s part of the interesting thing about the project—the condensed nature of the industry. We all go to the same four fashion weeks and the amount of people is limited. It’s a very close-knit circle of people.”

Anna Bauer’s Polaroids will be on view from September 5 to November 3 at the Loewe store, located at Calle Serrano, 26, Madrid, Spain.

Bottega Veneta’s Got Art Smarts

Bottega Veneta's Fall '13 Ads

For the past few years, Bottega Veneta designer Tomas Maier has taken an artistic approach to his campaigns, tapping multidisciplinary photographers such as Nan Goldin, Nick Knight, Annie Leibovitz, Jack Pierson, Peter Lindbergh, and more to bring a dynamic edge to his ads. Dubbed the Art of Collaboration, the project continues this season, with Maier commissioning New York-based artist Ralph Gibson to lens the Fall ’13 campaign. Best known for his eerie images with erotic undertones, Gibson turned out a series of moody snaps for the Italian house. His high-impact shots, which star Fall ’13 show-opener Raquel Zimmermann, debut above, exclusively on Style.com.

Prada in Bloom

-------

There wasn’t anything inherently minimal about the metallic leather judo socks and Japanese floral-print furs, bags and frocks in Miuccia Prada’s Spring 2013 collection. But simplicity—extreme simplicity—is precisely the concept behind the house’s Spring campaign, which debuts today exclusively on Style.com. Featuring some of our favorite women—like Eva Herzigova, Sasha Pivovarova, Amber Valletta, Raquel Zimmermann and more—the images, shot by Steven Meisel, do away with frills and thrills, letting Prada’s strong Spring stars (and clothes) shine.

Snoop, Top Dogg At Coachella

-------

Top models (Karlie Kloss, Hanne Gaby Odiele, and Raquel Zimmermann), designers (Alexander Wang), and celebrities (Kate Bosworth, Katy Perry, and Lily Collins) decamped to Indio this weekend for Coachella. Photographer David X. Prutting was on the scene for Style.com, capturing the crowd as they took in the headline acts and hit the party scene. What musician proved to be this year’s biggest draw? Two words: Snoop Dogg. The likes of Fergie, Josh Duhamel, Rose McGowan, and Chanel Iman all told us they were there to catch the rapper in action. There was also, of course, a large contingent there for Radiohead—including Alek Wek, Kloss, Jessica Szohr, and Ruby Aldridge—and the Black Keys, Wang and Zimmermann among them. In case you weren’t about to make the trek to the desert this weekend, here is Style.com’s postcard from Coachella.

Inez And Vinoodh’s New Muse: LouLou

-------

Two of fashion’s favorite image makers, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, have always been different from most photographers in their approach to models: “They’re people!” van Lamsweerde told Style.com in an interview about their recent tome, Pretty Much Everything. “It’s an exchange of inspiration, of trust. You spend a day together and definitely anyone that poses for anyone is in a very vulnerable position. It’s not nothing to let yourself be photographed,” she explained. Some of their most trusting subjects are fashion’s biggest names: Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Raquel Zimmermann, and Shalom Harlow. And though the duo generally keeps its lens focused on famous faces of that caliber these days, they have recently found inspiration in a new, unknown face—meet 19-year-old French model LouLou (no last name).

“We saw LouLou on the cover of Treats! magazine and flew her over from Paris (where she studies) to New York to meet us,” the duo, who photographed her for the upcoming Sports Issue of V Magazine, tells Style.com. “Her face resembles a young Penélope Cruz and her body is like that of Kate Moss. Our work is so much about the girl in the clothes and she provides us with so many new inspirations.”

For the editorial, they shot their latest muse (styled by Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele) in a studio and then had their technician drop the images into some of their most iconic images. Before V76 hits newsstands next month, Style.com has the exclusive first look at some of the photos, here. As for LouLou, look out for her in more I&V work soon: “We are shooting her for Bulgari at the moment, and next week we will post a new series with her on our site, InezandVinoodh.com.”
