AG Denim, Hollywood-Style

As stylist to some of Hollywood’s best-dressed starlets, Cher Coulter has made a name for herself by understanding her clients’ unique looks. Such was the reason that AG chose her to launch their debut Stylist Series—four capsule collections of jeans inspired by the actresses on her roster. “I work with fashion girls, so I wanted to carve out different personalities,” Coulter said of the design opportunity. “I am a celebrity fashion stylist, but hopefully I have different heads for different people. I’m not just a one-trick pony.”


For The Classic, Coulter was inspired by A.P.C. denim. “I turned to Françoise Hardy and the beat generation in late sixties Paris,” she said. They’re perfect for a young ingenue like Lizzie Olsen. The Eclectic is inspired by an artistic, bohemian girl, along with illustrations by Julie Verhoeven, who taught Coulter when she studied at Central Saint Martins in London. “She’s more of your model off duty,” she said of this second collection, which calls to mind Kate Bosworth. Coulter went back to London for The Rocker, taking cues from Balmain’s embellished jeans. A rockabilly vibe and darker colors toughened up the denim, which is just what you’d find on Coulter client Nicole Richie. And rounding out the series is The Bombshell, full of sexy, second-skin wares. “This girl was really influenced by nineties supermodels—statuesque women who weren’t afraid to wear really tight, skinny, high-waisted jeans.” They’re exactly what you’d expect to see on Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Indeed, the capsules offer a diverse range of cuts, washes, and treatments, each of which befit AG but also speak to Coulter’s range and influence.

Louis Vuitton has gotten The Selby’s Todd Selby (pictured) on the train theme that started with its Fall 2012 show. The French house had Selby travel by train from Paris to Shanghai, documenting his trip along the way. Selby’s photographs and videos are on Louisvuittonexpress.com, with plans to unveil a new leg of the journey each day up until the 19th, when the brand opens its first Louis Vuitton Maison store in China. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley reportedly caused a stir when she recently backed out of her position as the host of Project Runway All Stars after weeks of negotiation. The British stunner ditched the gig for a role in the upcoming film Mad Max: Fury Road alongside Zoe Kravitz and Riley Keough. The show’s producers found a new host in model Carolyn Murphy. Just five years after being bought by the London-based private equity firm Permira, Valentino is being sold to an unidentified sovereign wealth fund. The fund is one of Permira’s investors and plans to acquire the brand for £476 million. [Telegraph]

Tom Ford is set to open his first flagship store in the U.K. The 8,000-square-foot outpost will open on Sloane Street alongside Chanel, Gucci, and the newly added Alberta Ferretti outpost. Last night’s hot ticket was Tom Ford’s talk at New York’s 92nd Street Y, where the outspoken designer sounded off on fashion, film, and the lessons he’s picked up from the industry. Those awaiting his next film will have to wait a few years while he focuses on ready-to-wear, and those looking for a job, polish up your conversation. While on stage, Tom Ford (pictured) said former Gucci creative director Dawn Mello taught him to “only hire people you want to have dinner with.” [@fashionologie]

One more fashion brand is taking it to the streets. Jimmy Choo is launching its own Web site, Choo 24:7 Stylemakers, on which visitors can share tagged photos of themselves in their Jimmys. They’ll keep company with street-style shots by photographer Eddie—a.k.a. Mr. Newton—of editors and celebrities the footwear label has tapped as ambassadors, including Caroline Issa and Jessica Joffe. [WWD]

Passe isn’t passé. To celebrate its 135th birthday, Hermès is bringing back its Passe-Guide bag, with four exclusive styles based on the original to be auctioned online at Christie’s on May 14. For the look-but-don’t-buy set, the handmade bags, originally designed by Henri d’Origny, will be available for viewing through May 27 at London’s Burlington Gardens. [Vogue Italia]

What’s hers can be yours. The red Antonio Berardi dress that Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore to the New York premiere of Transformers: Dark of the Moon last June is hitting the auction block: The model is donating her gown to the British Heart Foundation’s Tunnel of Love auction, which takes place later this year. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Launches Lingerie, Ralph Lauren Taps OneRepublic, Burch Joins Bush For FEED, And More…

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is making her move into fashion design with a twenties-inspired lingerie collection for English retailer Marks & Spencer (she is currently the face of the chain’s Autograph label). Rosie-like proportions, alas, not included with purchase. [Telegraph]

On the subject of lingerie, an exhibition showcasing the late photographer Lillian Bassman’s work (featuring ladies in lacy underthings, stockings, and garter belts) is now on display at New York’s Staley-Wise Gallery. The cheeky exhibit, appropriately titled Lingerie, displays about 30 of Bassman’s photographs and handwritten notes. The exhibit is open until May 26. [Vogue Italia]

Ralph Lauren is going pop. The designer has tapped chart-toppers OneRepublic for his latest Big Pony campaign; the band’s not yet commercially released “Life in Color” has been selected as the soundtrack for the Bruce Weber-shot videos. [Rolling Stone]

As if you needed another reason to support Lauren Bush-Lauren’s do-good Feed brand, here it is: Tory Burch has lent her design skills in a new collaboration with Bush and Canadian retailer Holt Renfrew. The traditional burlap design, with Burch’s pops of color and logo, retails for $50 at Holt Renfrew stores and online. [Racked]

China’s leading photographer Chen Man has snapped it all, from singer Faye Wong on horseback to Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana playing mah-jongg with one of China’s leading men. The lenswoman goes back through her archives to curate her favorite works, now on display at Nowness. [Nowness]
