Love's Christmas Party

Donkeys, magicians, and rabbits. Did the circus come to London? Nope, just the Love magazine Christmas party, held last night at Camden’s Lady Ottoline, and hosted by editor in chief Katie Grand and Neil Barrett. Donkeys greeted partygoers upon arrival, and somehow, we were not surprised. This is LOVE after all, and it has its own quirky way of celebrating not just a great year, but also, its advent calendar, which is now at day 18. Thus far, it’s featured the likes of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Georgia May Jagger, and Lindsey Wixson prancing around in their Calvin Klein smalls. Even Clara, Katie Grand’s pet rabbit, was a calendar girl.

Edie Campbell, Florence Welch, Arizona Muse, Paul Simonon, Rankin, Tim Walker, and many more attended last night’s fete. And given that it’s almost year’s end, guests shared their highlights from 2013. “Standing in the hurricane on the beach at Dungeness with Sølve Sundsbø getting soaked whilst shooting a ‘summer’ story was kind of funny,” said Grand of her most memorable moment this year. Lulu Kennedy, LOVE‘s editor at large, also weighed in. “An editorial meeting presided over by Clara. She sat on a cushion in the middle of the table looking very regal, chewing our notes and printouts.”

Katie Grand Is Still in Love

Cara Delevingne Love CoverIt’s been five years since Katie Grand put a naked Beth Ditto on the first cover of Love magazine. “I had a lot to prove,” said the editor in chief of her early days at the publication. Now, after a slew of infamous stars (Kate Moss, Lea T, and Justin Bieber among them), Grand has selected a less likely face for her tenth issue—Minnie Mouse. “I wanted to do something that was sweet and charming, and Minnie was quite easy to understand,” she explained. Dubbed the Sweetie Issue, the Fall ’13 edition also features Mert & Marcus-lensed covers with Edie Campbell, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Chiharu Okunugi, and Cara Delevingne—each of whom don custom mouse ears by Gucci, Loewe, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu, or Jake and Dinos Chapman for Louis Vuitton. Inside, Miuccia Prada makes her modeling debut, Tim Walker snaps a lion, Mert & Marcus pose for a smooch with everyone’s favorite rodent (below), and Marc Jacobs interviews Jessica Lange. Just before running into Jacobs’ Paris studio, Grand called Style.com to talk kitsch, her demanding persona, and Delevingne’s shoot, which the model did on no sleep and sans makeup.

You’ve had everyone from Beth Ditto to Kate Moss to Lea T on your cover. Which has been most significant for you?
From the minute I started talking to Condé Nast about working together, I knew that I wanted Beth on our first cover. I just didn’t really care about what anyone said. When Beth, who had never met Mert & Marcus, arrived at the Chateau Marmont, where we were photographing, she ran in completely naked and said, “I’m here!” And I was like, “Yeah, good for you. You are everything that I want you to be.” She was perfect for that project.

Cara Delevingne, who has become sort of a Love fixture, is on one of the Fall ’13 covers. What draws you to Cara, and what makes her such a sensation at the moment?
I think she is a really nice, very sweet girl. She will travel across the Atlantic to do anything for me. I love that for this shoot, she actually hadn’t been to bed. It was the day after her DKNY party, so I was a little nervous about having booked her. I just thought, Oh, my God, this poor thing, she’s got to have this massive party, and then she has to come to work for the cover. Usually you don’t see Cara for the first couple hours of a shoot because she has very cleverly hidden herself under a table to sleep somewhere. But this time, we managed to get her hair done, and then we immediately pulled her in front of the camera without makeup. Designer Diary: Olivier Rousteing’s Postcard from L.A.

Last week, Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing took a trip to L.A. In addition to exploring the city and enjoying the sunshine, the designer attended a fete in his honor at the Chateau Marmont and had a fitting with his Met Ball date, Kate Bosworth. Here, Rousteing shares the details of his L.A. adventure exclusively with Style.com.

L.A. is such a fascinating city, and this trip was the first time I really got to enjoy it. I love L.A.’s light, its energy, and the cultural diversity. It has such a strong and unique character. Angelinos have a genuine approach to fashion that’s so different from that of Parisians or New Yorkers. They can be so casual but so glamorous at the same time. It was a very inspiring trip.

AG Denim, Hollywood-Style

As stylist to some of Hollywood’s best-dressed starlets, Cher Coulter has made a name for herself by understanding her clients’ unique looks. Such was the reason that AG chose her to launch their debut Stylist Series—four capsule collections of jeans inspired by the actresses on her roster. “I work with fashion girls, so I wanted to carve out different personalities,” Coulter said of the design opportunity. “I am a celebrity fashion stylist, but hopefully I have different heads for different people. I’m not just a one-trick pony.”


For The Classic, Coulter was inspired by A.P.C. denim. “I turned to Françoise Hardy and the beat generation in late sixties Paris,” she said. They’re perfect for a young ingenue like Lizzie Olsen. The Eclectic is inspired by an artistic, bohemian girl, along with illustrations by Julie Verhoeven, who taught Coulter when she studied at Central Saint Martins in London. “She’s more of your model off duty,” she said of this second collection, which calls to mind Kate Bosworth. Coulter went back to London for The Rocker, taking cues from Balmain’s embellished jeans. A rockabilly vibe and darker colors toughened up the denim, which is just what you’d find on Coulter client Nicole Richie. And rounding out the series is The Bombshell, full of sexy, second-skin wares. “This girl was really influenced by nineties supermodels—statuesque women who weren’t afraid to wear really tight, skinny, high-waisted jeans.” They’re exactly what you’d expect to see on Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Indeed, the capsules offer a diverse range of cuts, washes, and treatments, each of which befit AG but also speak to Coulter’s range and influence.

Louis Vuitton’s Train Tales, And More Of Today’s Top Stories

Louis Vuitton has gotten The Selby’s Todd Selby (pictured) on the train theme that started with its Fall 2012 show. The French house had Selby travel by train from Paris to Shanghai, documenting his trip along the way. Selby’s photographs and videos are on Louisvuittonexpress.com, with plans to unveil a new leg of the journey each day up until the 19th, when the brand opens its first Louis Vuitton Maison store in China. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley reportedly caused a stir when she recently backed out of her position as the host of Project Runway All Stars after weeks of negotiation. The British stunner ditched the gig for a role in the upcoming film Mad Max: Fury Road alongside Zoe Kravitz and Riley Keough. The show’s producers found a new host in model Carolyn Murphy. Just five years after being bought by the London-based private equity firm Permira, Valentino is being sold to an unidentified sovereign wealth fund. The fund is one of Permira’s investors and plans to acquire the brand for £476 million. [Telegraph]

Tom Ford is set to open his first flagship store in the U.K. The 8,000-square-foot outpost will open on Sloane Street alongside Chanel, Gucci, and the newly added Alberta Ferretti outpost. It is scheduled to open in 2013 and will house Ford’s full product range as well as menswear. [Entertainment Wise]
