2011′s Best-Dressed Model-Off-Duty: Can You Pick Just One?

Black leather jacket, black T-shirt, black stovepipes, black motorcycle boots: You know it’s fashion week when packs of identically dressed, genetically blessed girls stalk the streets, followed by swarms of photographers. But it wasn’t all Rick Owens and Ann Demeulemeester numbers this year. Models, not unlike editors and It girls, it seems, have realized that they can raise their personal stock value by stepping up their sartorial individualism. These days, the likes of Ruby Aldridge, Hanne Gaby Odiele, and Frida Gustavsson are just as well-known for their off-runway flair as they are for their on-runway struts. Abbey Lee Kershaw is often snapped vamping around town in an over-the-top fur, and Caroline Brasch Nielsen appears to own an entire closetful of Isabel Marant. We have our favorites.

Haute Holidays

What do you give the girl (or guy) who has everything? That’s what’s senior market editor Marina Larroude set out to discover when she polled style setters and tastemakers about what they’d get their equally stylish pals for the holidays. It wasn’t always easy to find that special something—how do you get noted bibliophile Karl Lagerfeld a book he doesn’t have?—but the likes of Miranda Kerr, Jen Brill, Lily and Ruby Aldridge, Scott Schuman and Garance Doré, and more managed nicely. (And in the case of the Kaiser? Brill found a book she’s almost sure isn’t on his shelves: Bunny Yeager’s Camera in Jamaica.) Read on to find out what fashion’s royalty is getting this year.

The Denim Jacket:
A Blast From The Past Or Present Perfect?

It’s time to dust off your jean jacket. Favored by the likes of Ruby Aldridge, Liu Wen, and Hanne Gaby Odiele, the denim staple is making a bid to replace the leather bomber as model-off-duty topper of choice. This summer, bona fide celebs (Cameron Diaz) and burgeoning trendsetters (Pippa Middleton) alike have been spotted layering snug, faded ones over feminine looks for an edgy update. Speaking of edgy, we loved the acid-wash, pharaoh-embellished number that Sleigh Bells’ Alexis Krauss wore to the Sasquatch festival this May. Same goes for Jonny Johansson’s heavily deconstructed indigo style from Acne’s Resort collection.

Get To Know Your Next Top Models

Fashion week whipped through New York, and now it’s off to Europe. But the runway styles are only some of the stars—also making their names were the handful of fresh-faced models who took key shows by storm. The clear frontrunners for this title of top newcomer are Emily Baker and Kate King. Both have long faces, razor-sharp cheekbones, and piercing eyes. And both are naturals on the runway, poised like they’ve been doing this for years. Baker—a 16-year-old from New Zealand who bears a striking resemblance to Iselin Steiro—walked Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Altuzarra, and Rag & Bone (to name just a few). And we’re getting a cool-girl, Ruby Aldridge vibe from King, who stunned at Diane von Furstenberg and Tommy Hilfiger. Other girls who caused a stir include Sui He, the Wenzhou, China, native with an elegant profile who opened Ralph Lauren (the first Asian model to do so in recent years), and Codie Young, an Aussie with dreamy eyes à la Gemma Ward, who did turns at Rodarte and Calvin Klein Collection. Stay tuned to see what happens in Europe.

Our Top New Models—And Then Some

With Fall 2010 fashion week officially over, we’ve pulled together our seasonal list of the top ten new runway strutters to watch. We were wowed by the Kirby twins, smitten with the Argentine stunners Tati Cotliar and Carla Gebhart, and love Celine campaign star Valerija Kelava. (Side note on her: Is it just us, or is she a dead ringer for fashion icon-of-the-moment Patti Smith?) But with only ten slots to fill, there were bound to be some very deserving honorable mentions. Some modelizers are no doubt rooting for Yuliana Dementyeva (left), the icy-hot Ukrainian who opened Riccardo Tisci’s Fall Givenchy show. Julia Nobis (center) nabbed a Calvin Klein exclusive in New York, but spots at Dries Van Noten, Celine, Rick Owens, LV, and Miu Miu in Europe should keep her top-of-mind. And Ruby Aldridge (right), seemed to be everywhere in New York, where she opened Marc by Marc Jacobs, but she found time to take the first walk at Erdem in London, too. What do you think? Are there any we missed? Which models are you most excited to see next season?
