Runway to Red Carpet: An Ongoing Fairy Tale and a Newcomer Worth Watching

-------

Natalie Portman Shanghai International Film FestivalThe glamour squad was out in full force on this week’s red carpets. The leading ladies of Maleficent continued to take sartorial cues from their characters at the film’s premiere in Tokyo. Elle Fanning donned an ivory Fall ’14 Alexander McQueen gown fit for a princess, while Angelina Jolie stepped out in a black, figure-hugging custom black velvet Atelier Versace cocktail dress.

As you are by now well aware, Beyoncé and Jay Z kicked off their highly anticipated On the Run tour on Wednesday, and per the usual, the couple’s custom costumes come courtesy of top designers, including Elie Saab, Givenchy, Diesel’s Nicola Formichetti, and Tom Ford. Queen Bey sizzled in her opening outfit, a plunging black Atelier Versace bodysuit with black sequined netting.

Meanwhile, in Shanghai, stars were dressed to the nines for the International Film Festival’s closing events on Sunday. Natalie Portman chose a black silk gown with a printed bodice fresh from Dior’s Resort ’15 runway for the occasion. Earlier in the day, Nicola Peltz walked the red carpet in a white silk and lace Giambattista Valli Fall ’13 Haute Couture gown at the premiere of Transformers: Age of Extinction. The Hollywood rookie flew onto our radar this week as she attended press events in wares by mega designers including Dolce & Gabbana, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, and Stella McCartney, to name a few. We’ll be keeping our eyes on this one.

Runway to Red Carpet: Summer Motifs and Bright Whites

-------

062114_Runway_To_Red_Carpet_blogStars were in a sunny state of mind this week, with highlights consisting of summery motifs and fresh hues. Kiernan Shipka set the tone in a pale pink peplum Marni dress with jeweled embellishments at the Much Music Video Awards in Toronto on Sunday.

Gowns on Thursday’s Critics’ Choice Television Awards red carpet were literal interpretations of the summertime theme. Lizzy Caplan stepped out in Valentino’s Pre-Fall ’14 gown decked with colorful butterflies, while Diane Kruger chose a floral Elie Saab Spring ’14 Haute Couture number. Chloë Grace Moretz went for a less obvious form of florals, donning a black-and-white frock printed with a wire-frame digital 3-D image of a flower from Christopher Kane’s Resort ’14 science-inspired lineup at Coach’s summer party on Tuesday in New York.

Fresh summer white also seemed to be a theme this week, with several notables choosing the color for a variety of events. Michelle Dockery selected a plunging Antonio Berardi sheath for the Cartier Queen’s Cup polo final in Windsor, U.K., while recent French Open champ Maria Sharapova opted for a croc-stamped, double-breasted sheath from Antonio Berardi’s Spring ’14 runway for the WTA Pre-Wimbledon Party in London. Natalie Portman also went for the trend, choosing a silk number with a cotton basque from Dior’s latest Resort ’15 runway for the Miss Dior exhibition opening in Shanghai.

Runway to Red Carpet: Babes on Broadway and a Splash of Feminine Flair

-------

tilda swintonNew York was graced with plenty of glitz this week when musically inclined stars took to the red carpet for Sunday night’s Tony Awards. A slew of silver-screen stars came out to show their support, with notables including Kate Mara, Emmy Rossum, Lucy Liu, and Maggie Gyllenhaal in attendance. Rossum, who is no stranger to the stage, turned up in a silver silk Ralph Lauren Pre-Fall ’14 gown. Liu was also a highlight in a Vivienne Westwood number that offered a fresh riff on the tuxedo.

On Saturday, Jaime King smoldered at Spike TV’s Guys Choice Awards, stepping out in a saucy black suede Emilio Pucci minidress with a web of crystal embellishments. Rihanna unsurprisingly took home the evening’s (somewhat degrading) Most Desirable Woman accolade, and donned a simple yet elegant black vintage John Galliano silk slipdress to accept her trophy.

Tilda Swinton, who, let’s face it, looks flawless in pretty much anything, walked the red carpet in a decidedly feminine burgundy Schiaparelli Couture for the premiere of Snowpiercer during the Los Angeles Film Festival. With structured hips and a form-fitting silhouette, the dress was an unlikely but stunning choice for the oft-androgynous actress.

Runway to Red Carpet: The Stars Shine Post-Cannes and Miley Covers Up

-------

Elle FanningFor the past two weeks, all eyes have been glued on the red carpets of the Cannes Film Festival, but the post-Cannes fashion has been packed with well-dressed Hollywood elite, too. On Tuesday, A Million Ways to Die in the West costars Amanda Seyfried and Charlize Theron kicked off their press tour across the pond with a photo call in London. The duo posed in a pair of LBDs—Seyfried chose a gold-embroidered Pre-Fall ’14 Alexander McQueen mini, while Theron opted for a Stella McCartney frock with exaggerated sleeves.

On Wednesday, the leading ladies of Maleficent looked to their characters for sartorial inspiration. At the film’s world premiere in Hollywood, leading villainess Angelina Jolie stepped out in a black Atelier Versace ball gown, while Elle Fanning looked every part the princess in a lilac beaded Elie Saab Spring ’14 Haute Couture gown.

In a rare move, Miley Cyrus chose a conservative and—dare we say it—sophisticated ball gown for a performance during the World Music Awards in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Her Giambattista Valli Fall ’12 Haute Couture was covered in delicate flowers, another unlikely move for the sassy songstress. If you’re like us and are hoping this is a sign of a new leaf for Miley, don’t count on it—she was back to her scantily clad, tongue-wagging self during a concert the next day.

Runway to Red Carpet: Bright Hues With an All-Black Streak

-------

RihannaWhile we’ve been seeing a recent surge in color thanks to the warmer weather, a handful of stars chose classic all-black ensembles for their red-carpet appearances this week. On Saturday, Anne Hathaway attended A Night Under the Stars at Nickelodeon Animation Studio in L.A. in a black vintage Chanel blouse printed with “No Smoking” in several languages over a black maxi skirt. The same night, Leslie Mann took to the red carpet in Saint Laurent’s Spring ’14 tuxedo-inspired jumpsuit at the American Comedy Awards in New York. On Thursday, Rihanna layered a Givenchy leather biker jacket over a sheer black lace gown from the Fall ’08 Haute Couture runway for the iHeartRadio Music Awards, where she picked up the trophy for Artist of the Year.

Despite the black streak, there was still plenty of color. Kiernan Shipka donned a bold blue Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall ’14 frock adorned with beads and feathers on the skirt for the premiere of God’s Pocket at LACMA on Thursday in L.A. In Houston, Naomi Watts chose an equally vivid hue, stepping out in a sunny yellow Preen Pre-Fall ’14 floral dévoré dress for a gala to celebrate the BVLGARI: 130 Years of Masterpieces exhibition launch.
