Runway to Red Carpet: Forever Floral

Emmy Rossum , Zhang Ziyi, and Mindy Kaling

This week, celebs hit the red carpet in a veritable bouquet of floral off-the-runway wares. As we were merrymaking Stateside, Zhang Ziyi arrived at Le Grand Bal de la Comédie-Française in Paris on July 4 wearing some brand-new Giambattista Valli Fall ’13 Couture. The gown—mermaid-finned and pontifically white, thanks to the designer’s porcelain-inspired theme—boasted dainty forget-me-nots cascading downward. Also on Independence Day, Mindy Kaling went to Guy Oseary’s Fourth of July party in Los Angeles wearing a floral-blocked take on a Marc Jacobs Resort ’13 dress.

On Tuesday in New York, Blake Lively headed to the premiere of hubby Ryan Reynolds’ new film,Turbo, donning a crystal-covered skirt from Burberry Prorsum Resort ’14. While not technically flora, the embellishments’ effect was one of dense, twinkling petals. The same day in L.A., Diane Kruger arrived at Jimmy Kimmel Live! sporting Emanuel Ungaro Resort ’14. The Fausto Puglisi-designed outfit featured little white daisies on a pastel-banded, black silk skirt.

On Wednesday, Emmy Rossum wore a Carolina Herrera Resort ’14 number with aplomb to Persol’s “Magnificent Obsessions: 30 Stories of Craftsmanship in Film” opening in Queens. The skirt’s big cobalt petals were accented by a skinny vermillion-bowed band across the waist, which the Shameless star further highlighted with a scarlet CH Carolina Herrera clutch.

Alessandra Ambrosio X Melissa, The 3-Year-Old Chanel Show Star, And More…

Alessandra Ambrosio has designed a collection of shoes, including a ballet flat and a fifties-inspired pump, for Brazilian footwear label Melissa. The pregnant supermodel is the first in a series of celebrities set to design styles for Melissa. [Vogue U.K.]

You know all the fuss about underage models? That didn’t stop Karl Lagerfeld from enlisting male model Brad Kroenig’s 3-year-old son to walk in the Chanel show yesterday. The little model sported a tweed blazer, cords, and a quilted black Chanel purse. [NYT]

WikiLeaks’ Fashion File, ScarJo And Ryan Split, Keeping Bankers’ Hours (And Tie Knots), And More…

WikiLeaks: the new fashion journalism? Among the revelations included in the thousands of pages of classified U.S. foreign policy documents—all full of less-than-favorable judgments on foreign leaders and attachés—recently released by the upstart organization, Vogue Italia plucked out a bit of sartorial snark: “Lady Mehriban Aliyeva”—the wife of Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan—”appears to have had substantial cosmetic surgery, presumably overseas, and wears dresses that would be considered provocative even in the Western world. On television, in photos, and in person, she appears unable to show a full range of facial expression.” [Vogue Italia]

Speaking of biting criticisms, UBS bankers were subjected to a few, too. The Wall Street Journal reports on a 43-page memo being sent to staff at five Swiss offices, which includes guidelines for appropriate dressing and general comportment (no eating onions or garlic!) for staffers. Among them? Be sure to match your tie knot to your face and/or body shape, please. [WSJ via Racked]

From the celebrity front: After less than two years, Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds are calling it quits and divorcing. At least they’ve put out one of the more truthful and witty statements about it we’ve seen in a while: “While privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated.” Realists to the end, those two. [Vogue U.K.]

And Women checks in with model Bruna Tenorio, who shares her favorite photo of herself (an early black-and-white shot by Mario Sorrenti), favorite cities (Rio, Paris, and New York), and her favorite drink (“the full cream milk at Starbucks”—we’re not sure what that means, but we like the sound of it). Rachel Roy Hears Voices (But Don’t Worry, She’s Into It)

Paper Man, Kieran and Michele Mulroney’s new film about a friendless writer (Jeff Daniels) and a lonely teenager (Emma Stone) who become unlikely friends, is about people who hear voices. Kieran Culkin (as a mopey stalker-type) and Ryan Reynolds (as a blue-tighted superhero) play imaginary companions who speak to the lead characters in anxious moments. Safe to say that at Ugg and the Cinema Society’s sneak preview last night at the Crosby Street Hotel, more than a few of the guests knew what that’s like. “When don’t I have a voice in my head? I think if we don’t speak to ourselves and keep ourselves motivated, we’re not really alive,” explained Rachel Roy (pictured). Not that they’re all good. Stone copped to having the proverbial angel-devil arguments in her head: “I call that the little green goblin, the anxiety—you know, that little panic in you,” she said. Luckily, she manages to muzzle hers. “I can usually quiet it down with the good ones.” At the after-party, there were plenty of angels (Dree Hemingway, Carolyn Murphy) on hand. As for the other guy? Well, Mike Myers and Alan Cumming dropped by, too. Who knows what invisible little troublemakers goad them on?

Get your burlesque on while you can—The Box may be getting busted for behind-the-scenes depravity. What else, really, did you expect?
