The Split-Second Preview: Sally LaPointe

-------

The Fall ’14 Ready-to-Wear collections are under way in New York, and will be followed by the shows in London, Milan, and Paris. Before the new clothes hit the runway, we’ve asked some of the most anticipated names to offer a sneak peek. Per usual, it’s a busy time for all—designers and fashion followers alike—so we’re continuing our split-second previews: tweet-length at 140 characters or less. Our entire collection of Fall ’14 previews is available here.

Sally LaPointe Debuts Pre-Fall

-------

Sally LaPointe

Sally LaPointe has been stretching her business legs recently. In the past six months, she’s upgraded to a larger studio, expanded her design team, and dipped her toes into the Resort market with a small capsule. “We didn’t expect Resort to do so well, and it did really well,” LaPointe told Style.com. The surprising success of that collection (Bergdorf placed several reorders) triggered her to launch Pre-Fall with a tight collection of signature items that are admittedly more wearable than the designer’s directional runway fare. “We’re starting to know who our customer is, more and more, and it’s a big relief. She’s growing up and is more streamlined now,” said LaPointe at a preview of the new lineup, which debuts here on Style.com. Core pieces included recognizable body-con sheath dresses featuring strong shoulders and sharp seaming. While LaPointe herself prefers all-black everything, retailers have reportedly been going for the plum-colored number with a toothsome torso cutout and open back, which was cut from an embossed silk jacquard that had a nice stretch to it. Elsewhere, LaPointe riffed on tuxedos with a smart pair of peplum trousers (she is planning to wear them to her Fall ’14 show in a few weeks), as well as a tailored topcoat done in wool cashmere that boasted croc-stamped leather lapels. Speaking of, outerwear has always been one of LaPointe’s strong suits, and another highlight here was a cropped, swingy camel jacket with leather panels. All in all, we’d say LaPointe’s Pre-Fall trial was a success worth repeating.

Sally LaPointe Goes for Gold

-------

New York fashion week officially kicks off in a week and a half, and in preparation, we’ve been running around the city sneak previewing several of the new Fall ’13 collections. At a recent studio visit with up-and-comer Sally LaPointe , the designer divulged that she’ll be showing jewelry—a collaboration with Meredith Kahn of Made Her Think—on the runway for the first time. Stylist Natasha Royt introduced the two designers, who used a gold bracelet that originally belonged to LaPointe’s boyfriend’s mother as a starting point. Kahn soldered together seven rows of chain links, all of which drape loosely around the wrist and are connected with a matching chain spine. While it was inspired by the 1994 Depeche Mode song “In Your Room,” LaPointe’s new lineup has a slight eighties vibe. And her collaborative bracelets are a fitting complement. The designer is also working with Alejandro Ingelmo on runway shoes for the third consecutive season. Ingelmo created booties with cutout sides and an architectural metallic heel that, like the bracelets (which will potentially be produced later), provides a “flash of gold.” Here, an exclusive look at Sally LaPointe’s gilded Fall accessories.

Sally LaPointe’s Fall ’13 show will take place February 8, at 11:00 a.m., at Pier 57 in New York.

Sally LaPointe, In Development

-------

Now in her second season, Sally LaPointe showed a futuristic, second-skin collection of after-hours gear on the far western fringes of Chelsea Friday night. Despite the sci-fi bent, LaPointe’s latest had an old-school inspiration: photography development (with, like, film) and the RGB process of colors—red, green, blue—appearing one at a time. The clothes followed the same progression. Monochromatic looks in silver were replaced by head-to-toe red, then turquoise, and finally black. LaPointe has been linked to Lady Gaga (whose new single dropped yesterday, too), and while there might not be too many non-pop-phenom takers for the collection’s molded hip peplums and lame leggings, they’re just the sort of thing Gaga would slip on to pick up the paper.
