Runway to Red Carpet: Ladies in Lace and Cues from ’80s Prom Queens

-------

When it comes to fashion, the red carpet can often be filled with the same old, same old. But now and again, some bold celebrities shake things up with experimental, next-level looks. Here’s what’s feeling fresh this week.

Zoe Saldana Guardians of the Galaxy Los Angeles Louis Vuitton Resort 2015From classic hits to updated takes on the past, a wealth of noteworthy wares walked down the red carpet this week. A handful of stars opted for frocks with lace or insets. Cate Blanchett and Zoe Saldana chose looks with all-over lace. Saldana attended the L.A. premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy in an ensemble from the Louis Vuitton Resort ’15 catwalk on Monday night, and Blanchett stepped out in a white lace-covered cocktail dress with butterfly sleeves from Elie Saab’s Spring ’13 Haute Couture offering for a SK-II beauty event in Shanghai the following evening. In Hollywood, Diane Kruger turned up at the Fox All-Star party in a black Marios Schwab Resort ’15 jumpsuit with a lace keyhole cutout, which was a popular detail for the season.

A surprising, yet decidedly fresh trend this week was the contemporary take on the 80s prom dress. Perhaps one too many Sixteen Candles reruns were the cause for inspiration, but several celebs seemed to be channeling retro prom queens. Rachel McAdams opted for a one-shouldered Zuhair Murad Fall ’14 Haute Couture jewel-toned number with a modern interpretation of a bustle at the hip for the New York premiere of A Most Wanted Man. Kylie Minogue went for the shimmer-effect, donning a gold metallic Blumarine Fall ’14 frock for a photo call for The Voice in Sydney. Selena Gomez decided on a more literal approach, layering piles of tulle over a Dior Spring ’14 cocktail dress for the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation gala in France. It appears there are still a few lessons we can learn from the decade of big hair, sleeves, and skirts.

Runway to Red Carpet: MTV Glamour and a Sultry Spiderweb

-------

Cate Blanchett in Christopher KaneWith Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards making the move to Brooklyn this year, we saw an interesting mix of Hollywood glamour and Brooklyn’s signature pared-down look on the red carpet. For instance, Ciara shone brightly in a heavily embellished Givenchy Fall ’10 Couture stunner, and Lady Gaga arrived in a newsworthy custom Prabal Gurung gown; however, a few of our favorite looks flew under the radar. Joan Smalls opted for a simple long-sleeve white leather dress from the Viktor & Rolf Fall ’13 runway, paired with strappy black leather Casadei boots, and singer Grimes donned a Versace necklace and patterned pants with a simple black top.

Following her sexed-up VMAs dress, Selena Gomez opted for a sweet Vera Wang Fall ’13 frock with a floral-jacquard print and butterfly peplum skirt for the L.A. premiere of her new film, Getaway, on Monday night.

The following evening, Cate Blanchett walked the red carpet at the Paris premiere of her film Blue Jasmine in a Christopher Kane dress made of delicate cobweb-like lace from his Resort ’14 collection. Paired with a simple low ponytail, barely there makeup, and nude pumps, the heady look was a clear standout on this week’s celebrity circuit.

We should also note that Wednesday marked the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech, and all eyes were on Washington, D.C., on this day. While it wasn’t a red-carpet event, the ever-stylish First Lady looked smart and sophisticated when she accompanied her husband to the Let Freedom Ring ceremony in a black fit-and-flare Tracy Reese Fall ’13 frock with a red floral print.

Runway to Red Carpet: Keeping it Cool

Maria Sharapova, Beyonce, and Hailee Steinfeld

As the temperatures continue to climb, celebrities are combating the sweltering weather with shorter looks on the red carpet. At Monday night’s premiere of Girl Most Likely, Kristen Wiig’s fresh frock from Viktor & Rolf’s Resort ’14 collection was perfect for battling New York’s ongoing heat wave. Down in Houston, Queen Bey’s postshow pick was a cool crop top and skirt custom designed for her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour by Emilio Pucci‘s Peter Dundas.

In Hollywood, athletes and silver-screen stars rubbed shoulders at Wednesday night’s ESPY Awards. Selena Gomez stood out in a spicy rouge lace number from Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall ’13 runway, and tennis star Maria Sharapova looked sweet and (perhaps more important) comfortable in an iridescent organza dress from J. Mendel’s Resort ’14 range. Farther down the coast, in San Diego, Hailee Steinfeld also opted for a scarlet mini at a special screening of her film Ender’s Game. The actress donned an eye-catching (literally) frock from Kenzo’s Fall ’13 lineup, which was covered with the house’s allover optical print.

Rebecca Taylor Hearts L.A.

-------

To celebrate her first West Coast flagship store on Robertson Boulevard (officially opening Thursday), designer Rebecca Taylor enlisted the help of her celebrity clients, including Jessica Alba, Kristen Bell, Rashida Jones, and Selena Gomez, to create one-of-a-kind tote bags for the occasion. Each of them was given creative license with a canvas tote that says “RT Hearts LA,” and the results range from Alba’s leopard-print number to Bell’s ultra-feminine pink, lace, and floral motif. Of her bronze and snakeskin bag, Jones tells Style.com, “I wanted to keep the bag simple so that it’s easy to wear, but I also wanted it to be consistent with Rebecca’s aesthetic, so I added small patched details and rope trim to give it that RT touch.” The bags, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting Dress for Success Worldwide West, go up for auction at the store’s opening party December 7 and will run for a week. Bidding starts at $100.

Yea, Nay, Or Eh? Sun Salutation

-------

Hollywood turned out this weekend for Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards, where a barrage of young stars—many of whom, admittedly, we’ve never heard of—took their turns on the red carpet. Dressing for an event like this one can be tricky, as age-appropriateness comes into play as well. The adult contingent needs to keep it kid-friendly (maybe Katy Perry could’ve shown just a little less cleavage than her usual, in a strapless cocktail frock by The Blonds), while the youth set needs to avoid going too primly grown-up. Disney star Selena Gomez hit just the right note in a sunny yellow dress by Christian Cota, tricked out with Sergio Rossi heels and a messy braid like those Guido Palau styled for the runways at Alexander Wang and Miu Miu. We think the length, the style, and the color are great for Gomez. What do you think? Is this kid’s choice your choice, too?
