Nudes on clothes. It’s a novel concept, and one that’s emerging as a trend on the London runways. Richard Nicoll has long collaborated with Linder Sterling—a British artist informed by Manchester’s seventies punk scene—and for Spring, the latter whipped up a montage of reptile and avian patterns atop vintage gay pornography. “I found the source material in a bookshop in Barcelona, and Linder treated it with snakes and birds of prey,” Nicoll told Style.com. “She almost always uses the body as a canvas for her collages. Look three—the bomber jacket—is my favorite.”
In both his men’s Spring and women’s Resort ’14 collections, Christopher Kane webbed 3-D grids to create naked female torsos and male skulls. The images lent a lo-fi, diagrammatic pop to simple T-shirts and sweatshirts.
And finally, Sibling—the riotous knitwear label founded by East End cool kids Joe Bates, Sid Bryan and Cozette McCreery—anchored its collection around a pinup-girl theme. At times, that girl found herself undressed and in various states of undulation across a number of allover prints. “We found the inspiration through World War II plane imagery, as well as vintage T-shirts,” McCreery told Style.com. “We were also after that West Side Story feel of young guys and girlie images. It’s almost quite innocent.”
The Spring ’14 menswear collections kick off this weekend in London, followed by the shows at Florence’s Pitti Uomo, in Milan, and in Paris. Today, the British Fashion Council announced the awardees of its Spring ’14 menswear Fashion Forward initiative—a year-old incubator fund that seasonally recognizes and supports all-star U.K. talent. Two new labels—Christopher Raeburn and Sibling—will join previous winner Lou Dalton. Raeburn is heralded for his tech-y outerwear, which strives to blend innovation, sustainability, and practicality. Sibling (left), on the other hand, embraces a grit-meets-glam East End aesthetic; designers Sid Bryan, Joe Bates, and Cozette McCreery have been known to send out boys in pompom masks and lots of leopard. All three winners will show during the third installment of London Collections: Men, which kicks off on June 16.
The British Fashion Council and Topman have awarded seven up-and-coming talents with NEWGEN Men sponsorship for the Spring ’14 season. First-time honorees include Agi & Sam (designed by Agape Mudmulla and Sam Cotton), Astrid Andersen, and Nasir Mazhar, while Matthew Miller, Lee Roach, Shaun Samson, and Martine Rose are returning NEWGEN veterans. The designers will receive funding to present their lines at the London Collections: Men, which kicks off June 16, and join the ranks of former winners like J.W. Anderson, James Long, and SIBLING.
London is jam-packed with emerging fashion talents. And now you can find all of them (or, at least, a lot of them) in one place. On February 17, Machine-A, a concept store founded by Stavros Karelis, will open permanently on 13 Brewer Street (it existed a few years ago, in an experimental capacity). Working with rainbow-haired stylist Anna Trevelyan, who serves as the store’s fashion director, Karelis will stock clothes by brand-new designers (Ashley Williams, Shaun Samson, Agi & Sam) and bright young stars (Louise Gray, Christopher Raeburn, Sibling), alongside wares by established labels like Raf Simons, Chalayan, and Mugler. Karelis hopes that Machine-A will serve as a platform to help promising youngsters establish an early retail presence. In addition to simply selling new designers’ collections, Machine-A will work with up-and-comers on collaborations and in-store installations, the first of which will feature Alex Mattsson. “My personal aim is to [offer] inspirational collections, innovative products, and comfortable high-quality clothes,” says Karelis, who also notes that Trevelyan’s input and keen eye for the next big thing have been invaluable. Case in point: the Spring ’13 ad campaign Trevelyan styled for the shop. Machine-A, located at 13 Brewer Street in London, will open on February 17.
