Heidi Merrick Spring 2014

-------

Everyone knows their Marcs from their Calvins. But as fashion month kicks into gear, we’ll be spotlighting the up-and-coming designers whose names you’ll want to remember.

Label: Heidi Merrick

Need to Know: Surfing runs deep for SoCal native Heidi Merrick—her father is legendary surfboard shaper Al Merrick. So it’s no surprise that her Spring ’14 collection began with a daydream about a surfing adventure down the coast of Morocco, during which she’d stop briefly in Paris, fly to Casablanca, and head to Essaouira and surf Moulay Bouzerktoune, before a road trip to Dakhla. The heady colors and near native prints that Merrick used for this collection reflect the three phases of that trip: Paris, Essaouira and then the sand and surf on the road to Dakhla.

Spring ’14′s silhouettes reflect a modern take on the California life and the new wares include fabrics, prints, and wovens that Merrick’s been developing in her L.A. studio. Hemlines have gotten shorter on top and longer on the bottom, and a bleached out bomber and white leather bikini bottoms are standouts. Her Spring ’14 collection debuts in the above film, exclusively on Style.com.

She Says: “There’s an ease to the fits and a lightness to the fabrics that make them layer beautifully—which defines the California girl in a way, she’s not dressing off the rack. The detail and tailoring in the collection lend itself to an easier lifestyle, one whose day ends somewhere where you can see the sun set.”
