With Help from Kate Hudson, Chrome Hearts Shows a Brighter, Softer Side of Rock ‘n’ Roll for Spring

-------

Chrome Hearts & Kate Hudson Host Garden Party To Celebrate CollaborationSpring was in full effect last night at the Hollywood launch party for the latest KH + CH collection, a sunglasses line Kate Hudson designed for Chrome Hearts. Party guests arriving at the retailer’s Robertson Boulevard flagship walked into an outdoor oasis, surrounded by hedges high enough to keep the paparazzi at bay and conceal a candlelit courtyard filled with pink peonies and birdcages. They were greeted with kumquat coolers and cucumber martinis from Nobu.

“We wanted it to feel springy,” Hudson said of the event while standing underneath a light-strewn tree. Her design partner, Laurie Stark, who founded Chrome Hearts with her husband, Richard, expanded on the decor inspiration: “Whimsical, nature, light bright, and representative of my relationship with Kate.”

Steven Tyler, Fergie, Rachel Zoe, Brooke Burke-Charvet, Gareth Pugh, and deejay Samantha Ronson mingled while a quartet of three violinists and a cellist played orchestral versions of alt-rock, including nearly all of Radiohead’s The Bends. Display cases showed off KH + CH’s sunglasses and jewelry lines, including another jewelry collaboration to come consisting of angular diamond pavé earrings, rings, and bangles that Hudson and Stark both wore.

Fergie, who counts herself a fan of Hudson and Stark’s jewelry collection, offered her take on their partnership: “The jewelry line is very rock-star girlfriend, taking Chrome Hearts in a more feminine direction. Laurie and Kate are like sisters. They’ve been best friends for a very long time and I think that shows in the line.”

Tyler also gushed about his fondness for Chrome Hearts. “My man bag: Chrome Hearts. My plunger at home: Chrome Hearts. I’ve even got a tube of KY Jelly that’s Chrome Hearts, but that I never use,” he joked. In all seriousness, though, “I love those guys. They’re so decadent. Wherever I go all over the world, I go into Chrome Hearts. Their stuff will last forever. It’s kind of like Louis Vuitton—you’ll have it for another thirty years.”

The “American Dream Woman”

-------

When you’ve been designing rock star-friendly jewelry for 20 or so years—the kind that even Karl Lagerfeld is known to wear—you pick up a few friends in high places. And if you’re really good, said friends in said places even take a turn in front of your camera, for the photography you’ve nurtured from a hobby to a professional advantage (when you can shoot your brand’s own campaign) to a full-on fine art side project. So it goes with Chrome Hearts’ Laurie Lynn Stark, who’s taking a weekend off from the jewelry beat to show her work at the St. Moritz Art Masters in Switzerland. (Not a bad venue for her second show ever.) Stark trained her lens on friends and fans like Lagerfeld, Steven Tyler, a few of the extant Sex Pistols, and Kate Hudson, who trusts her enough to be shot, ahem, on the commode. But our favorite, no offense to Kate, are Stark’s shots of Cindy Crawford (above). “Looking back at my body of work, I can see how important it was that this shoot happened later in my career,” Stark told Style.com. “Cindy is the utmost professional and working with her set a very high bar for me. It’s just beautiful to watch how she orchestrates her family, work, passion for living and loving—she is the American Dream Woman.”
