Cara Wants Candy…And Hogan’s Zebra Stripes

Fall 2013 marks Love magazine’s Katie Grand’s second collaborative capsule for Hogan. Titled Gang, the range includes everything from iPhone cases to skate shoes, and features lots and lots of zebra print, simply because, as Grand explains, “It felt right and looked great.” In true Grand style, the collection debuts via a playful film, which stars Love-ettes like Cara Delevingne, Tallulah Harlech, Stephanie Seymour, and Ondria Hardin. Shot by Daniel Jackson, the short shows the ladies bouncing around in Katie Grand x Hogan’s wares to the tune “I Want Candy,” sung by Miss Delevingne herself. “Cara kept saying how she wanted to do something with me that wasn’t modeling, so when I wanted to do something special with the video, I thought it was ideal to get her to sing the soundtrack,” Grand told Style.com. Paris in New York

Soho got a French infusion last night with the official opening party for Vanessa Bruno’s Greene Street pop-up shop. After opening several retail locations in her native France, then in London, then Los Angeles, and a few spots in Asia, the designer now has her sights set on New York. She plans on eventually opening a permanent New York flagship, but a fashion-week pop-up is a good place to start. And when she saw the space that was available—an open 1,300-square-foot loft—she simply couldn’t resist. “You cannot find anything like this in Paris. And you can do a lot with a place like this,” Bruno told Style.com. Indeed, she did do a lot with it—the pop-up features her Spring ’13 collection, a Ladurée Macaron counter, Diptyque candles, and wall-sized blowups of this season’s ad campaign starring Stella Tennant. It was a nice pause française for guests like Natalie Joos, Tallulah Harlech, and Zani Gugelmann in the midst of New York fashion week. Said Leandra Medine, “I am really happy about Paris relocating to New York—getting to Soho is way cheaper than Le Marais.”

The Vanessa Bruno pop-up shop is located at 131 Greene Street and is open through February 26.

Maiyet’s Movies

The Geoff Dyer novel Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi is made up of two not exactly connected halves. In the first part, the titular Jeff performs his quasi-professional duties as an art writer making the rounds at the Venice Biennale, i.e., party-going, swilling free drinks, and mingling with the beautiful and fabulous. The novel’s second half, meanwhile, follows an unnamed protagonist, Jeff perhaps, as he wanders, mostly on his own, through the ancient Indian city of Varanasi. Last night’s party in London for Maiyet weirdly merged the two halves of Dyer’s novel. On the one hand, the NOWNESS-hosted shindig had everything a scene-maker could ask for, what with free Champagne (and food, to boot), a performance by Josephine and Alexandre de la Baume’s band, Singtank, and name-drop-worthy attendees like Felicity Jones and Tallulah Harlech. And the Varanasi of it all was amply represented by Maiyet founders Paul van Zyl and Kristy Caylor, who spoke to the assembled crowd about their company’s mission to incorporate rare artisanal skills into their clothes, and specifically about their jacquard production based in…Varanasi. “It’s one of those places that changes you,” Caylor noted, affirming Dyer’s read on the city. “I almost don’t even know how to describe it.”

Varanasi isn’t the only place Maiyet has laid down roots. The brand also has a presence in Kenya, which provided the setting for the series of short films director Cary Fukunaga (who also directed Jane Eyre) made for its Resort 2013 collection. The debut of a re-edited version of the vignettes, which combine them into one short film, served as the occasion for last night’s festivities. “We really just love to work with creative people,” Caylor said when asked if she and van Zyl were planning any future film productions. “That could be a weaver in a small town somewhere, or it can be someone like Cary. I think our next collaboration could be a piece of music, or anything really. It could take any form.”

Putting On—And Taking Off—The Best Of British Fashion

London calls, and the world answers. London fashion week is in full swing, and what better time for an English retailer to indulge in a little justified bragging? Matches tapped London’s best designers for a new installation at its Marylebone flagship, which it debuted over the weekend to a crowd that included Giles Deacon, Norton & Sons’ Patrick Grant, Elizabeth Saltzman Walker, Tallulah Harlech, and the British Fashion Council’s Caroline Rush. The store’s mannequins were ingeniously dressed in key looks by U.K. labels including Stella McCartney, Roksanda Ilincic, Alexander McQueen, Burberry, and Christopher Kane.

Matches’ stock is very English; its clientele, says CEO Tom Chapman, more a mix. “Fifty-five percent of our clientele is online, and half is international,” he said. “We send bucket loads to Australia and China—we’ve gotten used to tiny feet sizes. Then again, we get a lot of cool hunters after that very latest thing—and to be honest, much of that is created by our very own homegrown talent. They do us proud.”

The atmosphere last night on the South Bank, on the other hand, was a trifle more French—à la Moulin Rouge. The foxes were out for the launch of Marios Schwab’s new lingerie collection for Kallisti at the Crazy Horse. And not just the dancers who modeled the lingerie. A renegade (yet fashion-savvy) fox broke into one of the venue’s dressing rooms and chewed through dancers’ Louboutins right before show time.

For Schwab, lingerie has long been a part of life. “My dad worked in the lingerie industry for Triumph,” he said, “so I have always been surrounded by the stuff.” But it may be more topical just at present. “My seamstress is reading Fifty Shades of Grey during every break,” he laughed. “I think these days people are thinking, screw it—literally—we want to enjoy life, and our bodies.” A ten-minute show was enough to titillate the likes of Leigh Lezark, Harley Viera-Newton, Eliza Doolittle, and Pixie Geldof. And that, of course, was the point. “Being provocative is back on the menu in fashion,” Schwab said.

Dreaming Of An Alber Christmas

Christmas at Claridge’s is fairy-tale stuff, on the list of “things to do before I die” for many. Add Lanvin to the package and the fantasy goes into overdrive. That’s what it was last night at the cozy soirée hosted by Alber Elbaz to unveil his new Christmas tree for the storied hotel.

Elbaz takes over the job from John Galliano, who had the gig two years running. And this was no new age fantasy extravaganza as Galliano delivered before. Alber’s homier tree included miniature Lanvin boxes tied in navy ribbons, reindeers, and jewel-colored streamers, but the highlights were the top and bottom. Perched at the tip was a doll version of the designer himself; at the bottom, poupées dressed up as concierge staff and customers of Claridge’s. It was a nod by Mr. Elbaz to his longstanding patronage at the hotel.

The English old and new guard who gathered to sample the ham tarts and mulled wine included Sir Paul Smith, Gordon Ramsay, and Nicky Haslam, while the younger set (mostly dressed in Lanvin) included Tallulah Harlech, model of the moment Suki Waterhouse, and Jade Jagger’s daughter, Amba Jackson. All this while Mike Figgis’ girlfriend, Rosey Chan, performed Ravel and Bach on the piano—with one hand tied around her back.

As for Elbar’s Christmas wish? “Maybe I will go to Morocco, maybe India, we shall see,” he said. “Right now, though, a good rest in a warm climate will be a great Christmas gift to myself.”
