Noticed: Separated At Birth?
Dress-loving songbird (and, as of this weekend, three-time MTV European Music Award winner) Taylor Swift now “wears the pants,” according to the cover story of the December/January issue of Harper’s Bazaar. The magazine put her in a few of the best pairs of the season for a shoot with Paola Kudacki. We’ll let her finish, but one of the best pants-wearers of recent years was Lindsey Wixson, as captured by Mert & Marcus for the Spring ’10 Miu Miu ad campaign. Call them soul sisters. Next up: A duet?
Supermodels MATE For Life, And More Of The Day’s Top Stories
Top models Karlie Kloss, Lily Donaldson, Constance Jablonski, Isabeli Fontana, Izabel Goulart, and Edita Vilkeviciute were among the guests who flocked to Peru to celebrate the opening of Mario Testino’s Asociación Mario Testino—a.k.a. MATE—a non-profit organization promoting Peruvian art. While Testino’s work will be on permanent display, an inaugural exhibition will open to the public on July 17. [MATE]
When supermodel Doutzen Kroes saw the recent cover of Vogue China, she was surprised at what she saw. The magazine had photoshopped her image so that she looked as though she only had one leg. “I think photoshopping is OK until something like that happens,” she said. “You don’t want to lose one of your limbs.” Agreed. Raf Simons’ Couture debut at Christian Dior had everybody talking. The floral arrangements were just as head-turning as the clothes. The men of Brazil are in for a treat. Gucci is opening a men’s store in São Paulo on July 21. The 3,600-square-foot shop will be Gucci’s sixth men’s-only outpost and will include a full range of menswear, accessories, and luggage, as well as a made-to-measure tailoring program. [WWD]
Taylor Swift just gave Lady Gaga a run for her money—literally. The country pop singer has taken reign as the highest-earning star under 30 years old, taking in an impressive $57 million. Gaga’s earnings dropped from $90 million to $52 million (still not too shabby), landing her the fourth spot on the list, along with Adele, Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Kristen Stewart. [Vogue U.K.]
What The Kids Chose
This weekend, the Kids’ Choice Awards and the Academy of Country Music Awards offered two takes on event dressing: young, short, and bright for the kids, glammed-out for the twang set.
At Friday’s Kids’ Choice Awards, the length of choice was mini. Miranda Cosgrove (above left) was the latest young Hollywood coup for Miu Miu; the iCarly starlet, whose show won for Favorite TV Show, wore a shocking pink, strapless gown by the label. Paris Hilton (above center) chose a macramé-inspired, high-necked option from Opening Ceremony. And Heidi Klum (above right), not to let a few youngsters show her up, went short in glittering Gucci.
At last night’s ACM Awards, the vibe was glitzier (the show was in Vegas, after all). There were plenty of people who could’ve toned down the spangle, but also several who did glamour right: Nicole Kidman (below right) in fur-accented L’Wren Scott, for one, and the evening’s big winner, Entertainer of the Year Taylor Swift (below left), in butter yellow Elie Saab Couture.
“A Frozen Moment Meant To Be Consumed”
The step-and-repeat of red-carpet coverage—the parade of celebrities in front of branded billboards at premieres, parties, and galas, where they’re photographed by the paps—has become an established part of media coverage. So established, in fact, that we barely notice anymore how artificial it is. But Richard Phillips (above) does. “I wanted to make that celebrity endorsement the single subject of my paintings,” the painter says. “What fascinated me about their expressions is that they’re totally rehearsed and meant only for the still capture, for the shot. It’s a frozen moment meant to be consumed.”
Phillips’ new show, Most Wanted, opens this week at London’s White Cube Gallery and features those frozen moments writ large: giant portraits of celebrities like Kristen Stewart, Taylor Momsen, Chace Crawford, and Taylor Swift in front of logo-splashed backdrops, staring slightly glazedly out at their adoring public. Short And Sweet To The Stage?
The silhouettes we’ve been seeing on the runways and at our pre-fall appointments have been long, long, long. But no matter—at last night’s People’s Choice Awards, the celebrities (and their stylists) spoke, and they said “short.” Thigh-grazing frocks were the look of the evening, from Leighton Meester’s flower-embroidered Vionnet to Taylor Swift’s J. Mendel (the same dress recently seen on Natalie Portman on the cover of Vogue). And in what could be an argument for dressing for the award you want to win, Kristen Stewart looked as glittering as a gold trophy in her Reem Acra minidress—and beat Angelina Jolie to walk off with the Favorite Movie Actress prize.
