Resort Culottes: Dropping Like It’s Hot

culotte-inspired Resort trousers from GivenchyAt this time last year, designers were busy making knee-length Bermudas and basketball shorts. This Resort season, they took things one step further, lowering hemlines on baggy, culotte-inspired trousers so they hit somewhere between mid-calf and just above the ankle. We noticed crisp white styles in the new lineups from Thakoon Addition, Ports 1961, Adam Lippes, and Sonia Rykiel (the latter two whipped them up in pliant leather and pleather, respectively). And while labels like Valentino and Roksanda Ilincic, among others, showed the fresh silhouette in a casual context, Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci made them evening-appropriate in black satin paired with a pair of killer ankle-strap sandals. Unless you’ve got stems like Joan Smalls’, we’d recommend rocking heels while test-driving this trend.

Here, a collection of Resort’s new culottes.

Onesie Direction

A jumpsuit from Christopher Kane's Resort 2014 collectionWomen can’t get enough of jumpsuits, and here’s why: All-in-ones, which seamlessly transition from day to night with a pair of heels, offer all of the polished nonchalance of trousers and none of the fuss of coordinating separates. The Resort collections were full of new takes on the look. Christopher Kane, Reed Krakoff, and Thakoon Addition did clean, strapless versions, while Jonathan Saunders and Maria Cornejo showed slouchier ones in slippery satin. Personally, we can’t get enough of the graphic mosaic number from 3.1 Phillip Lim.

Models In Demand: Pre-Fall’s Top New Faces

New models’ careers are often made on the runways, but posing for pre-fall lookbooks can really build up a girl’s momentum. Several fresh faces in particular have been making waves this season. First up is Tilda Lindstam, whose star continues to rise. Casting directors’ favorite Swede-of-the-moment walked down the runway at Oscar de la Renta and Calvin Klein, and also appeared in lookbooks for A-list labels like Givenchy, Acne and Prabal Gurung. Meanwhile, pouty French beauty Marine Deleeuw, one of Spring’s top ten catwalk rookies, showed off her editorial chops at Cßline, Lanvin, Narciso Rodriguez, Rag & Bone, Donna Karan, and Barbara Bui. Another up-and-comer who’s made an impact over the past several weeks is redhead Magdalena Jasek. She recently scored the Louis Vuitton Spring campaign, walked in Calvin Klein’s show, and turned up on the pages of lookbooks for Cßline, Thakoon Addition, and Escada. Finally, we can’t get enough of Valery Kaufman. The model debuted at Alexander Wang’s Spring ’12 show, logged an impressive number of Spring ’13 runways, and really hit her stride during pre-fall, posing for 3.1 Phillip Lim, Narciso Rodriguez, and Carven. Be sure to keep an eye out for these ladies on the Fall ’13 catwalks—the shows start February 7.

All In One

Choosing a chic jumpsuit requires an editorial eye, and clearly, Likuna Karkashadze (pictured) has one. It doesn’t hurt that fashion journalist and stylist Natuka Karkashadze is her sister. The Georgian stunner paired her lavender paisley one-piece with simple black stilettos and a mini bag, which made for the perfect look to wear to the Paris fashion shows. Street-style photographers wasted no time snapping her photo, either. We liked her getup so much that we rounded up four of our favorite printed jumpsuits, from Stella McCartney to Issa, to try out now.

On Our Radar: A Taste For The Tropics

The Fall runways may have left splashy prints largely behind for brocades, dark burgundies, and fur, but with Spring clothes and accessories now in stores, the trend isn’t over yet. After spending the last few weeks up to our elbows in Fall collections preparing the new issue of, the wilder stuff is a nice relief. Reed Krakoff’s Atlantique tote in printed canvas started me thinking about flora and fauna, and a few clicks later I added a Thakoon Addition floral printed romper and Suno’s slip-on sneaks to my wish list, too. They’re like a tropical vacation—and who knows, they might even bring back the warm weather.
