Since launching French label Piece d’Anarchive in 2011, sisters Deborah and Priscilla Royer have proven their knack for fusing the conceptual and the wearable. Case in point: their black, white, and navy Spring ’14 collection, which the pair presented in September during Paris fashion week. The collection was inspired by the house of conceptualist Jean-Pierre Raynaud, who, after devoting twenty-five years to building his abode, tore it down upon completion, because he thought it was too flawless.
Boasting every imaginable iteration of grids and stripes, the graphic wool, nylon, leather, mesh, and silk wares are showcased in an austere film by director Takuya Uchiyama and artistic director Tiffany Godoy. “The idea was to stage our own gang, to show the reality and attitude behind the brand,” the designers told Style.com. Indeed, the short is chock-full of attitude, thanks in part to a pouty Lily McMenamy, who stars alongside such models as Barbara Lear, Amandine Choquet, and Jimmy Q. “Everything about Lily is unusual compared to other models. She moves in a wild way. She is not afraid to do acrobatic gestures, and she stares at the camera as if she was casting a spell on it.” Watch the bewitching video’s debut here, exclusively on Style.com.
There were a couple of reasons why Tiffany Godoy’s launch on Saturday night for the latest issue of her magazine The Reality Show made a perfect full-stop for Tokyo’s fashion week. The most obvious was that the theme of the magazine was a handful of stylish young Japanese women incorporating Chanel couture into their everyday wardrobe (like the one at left)—and the week was dominated by Karl Lagerfeld’s multi-event launch of his latest project, The Little Black Jacket, with Carine Roitfeld styling 120 men, women, and children in one of Chanel’s most iconic pieces of clothing.
But it was actually The Reality Show‘s launch party itself that had more to say about the state of Japanese fashion. There could not have been a more stylish Saturday night crowd anywhere in the world. Not in any forced, self-conscious way, but simply because of the seemingly effortless subtlety with which Tokyo kids incorporate a fashion statement into their everyday wear. It might be ski-derived, or collegiate, or goth, or just plain old denim-based, but it demands a double take every time. If there is something curatorial about it, it’s scarcely academic. To me, it reads like a natural expression of an ongoing fascination with all life’s intricacies, and, in the face of what Japan has been through in the past 12 months, that seems like an optimistic impulse. There were other obvious tokens of upbeat—Kim Jones, in Tokyo for Louis Vuitton, said the menswear collection had sold half a million euros’ worth its first day on the shop floor. The Ferrari shop at the end of main shopping drag Omotesando had a big SOLD OUT sign in its window. And Tokyo is still the greatest city in the world for creative merchandising. The customized fittings in a tiny shop called The Soloist, the latest venture from Number (N)ine’s Takahiro Miyashita, were things of breathtaking beauty. No question it’s been a hard year for Japan, but amid the destruction and damage that followed the tsunami and Sendai earthquake, there’s plenty of energy and verve to spare in the country, too. The evidence is on display in the second issue of The Reality Show, the Tokyo-based fashion magazine edited and creative directed by Style.com contributor Tiffany Godoy. For the new issue, legendary Japanese lensman Nobuyoshi Araki—a favorite of Björk’s—shot the black-and-white portfolio of 10 up-and-coming personalities, including the well-known (model Jessica Michibata and actress/former Miu Miu face Rina Ohta, in Prada, above) to the street-stylers who won Reality Show‘s online competition. “We are hoping it will show a bit of power coming out of Japan,” Godoy says. It’s not quite The Real Housewives of Osaka. The latest Reality Show isn’t even a show at all—it’s a new magazine out of Tokyo, created and edited by fashion writer (and Style.com contributor) Tiffany Godoy and Tomoyuki Yonezu. For the first issue (actually 5 separate small magazines wrapped together in a giant poster), Godoy approached style icons who’ve caught the eyes of Japan’s rabid street-style photogs—everyone from acknowledged celebrities, like Japanese supermodel Ai Tominaga (above) and DJ/scenester Mademoiselle Yulia (below) to the hairstylist-in-training Nirei twins—and had them style themselves in a combination of their own clothes and the runway styles of one designer of their choice. (Tominaga chose Japan’s own Yohji Yamamoto; Mademoiselle Yulia, Balmain.) The magazine, Godoy says, aims to be “a window between Europe and Asia,” but Tominaga, for her part, is a hometown loyalist. “I want Japan to refine what ‘Japanese’ is,” she says in her interview. “Look inside. I don’t mean look back, but look at themselves, look around.” Fellow Japanese may be looking around, but odds are all eyes were on Tominaga herself tonight at the magazine’s launch party in Tokyo, where she took to the decks as a special guest DJ.
