According to WWD, ever-popular British high-street retailer Topshop has signed a lease for a 90,000-square-foot store on Fifth Avenue and 49th Street. The new digs will be the second-biggest Topshop store in the world, trumped only by the brand’s Oxford Circus flagship in London. It’s a logical move, considering the success of the company’s Soho shop, which marked Topshop’s U.S. debut when it opened in 2009. But the news has got us wondering: Could Midtown be gaining some cred? It’s not exactly the first place we associate with on-the-pulse chic, but considering Dover Street Market bowed in Murray Hill in December and that Topshop—along with all its covetable capsules—is moving in, we think the hood could have some potential.
Anyone who follows fashion news was well aware that yesterday was Kate Moss’ 40th birthday. Naturally, the super was sent a garden’s worth of flowers, hoards of neatly wrapped packages from all her favorite designers, and an alleged 1970s Porsche from Topshop’s Sir Philip Green. As for her party, that took the form of a boozy, two-hour lunch at London’s posh 34 restaurant. And while guests like Naomi Campbell, John Galliano, Mario Testino, and Stella McCartney supposedly racked up a casual 5,000-pound bill, the Telegraph writes that the crew ordered nothing but appetizers, champagne, and cocktails. Considering they were feting the woman responsible for the phrase, “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels,” we’re not terribly surprised by the menu. What’s more is Moss’ latest reported sound bite: Post-party, she’s said to have quipped, “I may be 40, but I still know how to party.”
This morning, NEWGEN, the British Fashion Council’s Topshop-sponsored emerging talent scheme, announced the seven new talents who will receive sponsorship to present their Fall ’14 collections during London fashion week in February. Fledgling designers and brands including 1205, Marques’Almeida, Lucas Nascimento and Simone Rocha (left) will receive support for their runway shows while designer Ryan Lo, a Fashion East alum, will receive funding for a presentation. Meanwhile, Claire Barrow (another Fashion East grad) and Danielle Romeril will house their new collections in an exhibition space. The NEWGEN committee, chaired by journalist Sarah Mower, MBE, selects designers based on their creative strengths and distinct points of view. Past awardees have included Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane, Mary Katrantzou, Nicholas Kirkwood, Jonathan Saunders, and J.W. Anderson.
Fashion East, Lulu Kennedy’s London-based young designer initiative, announced its Fall ’14 lineup today, and the Topshop-sponsored platform is adding two new up-and-comers to the mix. Helen Lawrence (who was featured on Style.com for Spring ’14) and Louise Alsop will join Fashion East veteran Ashley Williams in presenting their collections this February. Lawrence (left), a graduate of Central Saint Martins’ MA program, is best known for her vibrant knitwear, and for the past few seasons, has been working with much-touted rising menswear designer Craig Green. Alsop, meanwhile, graduated from the University of Westminster in 2013, and boasts an intriguing dark, grungy, layered aesthetic. The pair of talents replaces Fashion East grads Claire Barrow and Ryan Lo, who completed their third and final season with the initiative in September.
Oh, the weather outside is frightful…but bright furs are so delightful. Real or faux, furs in electric hues are the savviest way to keep warm this season. However, if you’re questioning the life span of a candy-colored fur bag, take note: This isn’t just a winter trend. Between the expressionist coats at Prada and the fuzzy bags, jewelry, and Buggies at Fendi, bold fur had a major warm-weather moment on the Spring ’14 runways. Go big in a nearly neon coat, or add just a hint of fluff with a covetable key chain. Shop all of our favorite colorful pieces by 3.1 Phillip Lim, Fendi, Topshop, and more, below.
