Jewelry designer Amélie Riech has an aesthetic rooted in the unconventional. Since launching her line Uncommon Matters in 2008, the former stylist and consultant, who splits her time between Paris and Berlin, fuses surprising materials—like porcelain and hand-sanded glass—to create geometric baubles that combine severity and femininity. Take her Spring ’14 collection, for instance, which explores broad notions of movement and transformation through surface and space. Black onyx and rose gold cut generously into large tiles have a mirrorlike quality. “My main motto,” offered Riech, “has always been ‘form follows content.’” Deceptively simple necklaces and bracelets unfold and extend into different shapes. Closures are often hidden. “I am always trying to reduce each design to its essence; closures usually disturb the overall effect,” said Riech.
While ideology and technique are integral to the design process, Riech’s focus now is on broadening her audience. A perfume bottle for Folie À Plusieurs, as part of a new fragrance collaboration with contemporary artists, and a jewelry line for the French silverware company Christofle promise to extend her reach.
