Are designers continuing to drop off the Lincoln Center schedule? Following news that Vera Wang and Carolina Herrera will be skipping the tents this coming season, WWD reports today that Michael Kors and Diane von Furstenberg could also be about to jump ship. While IMG announced plans earlier this month to make the Lincoln Center platform more affordable and less of a frenetic circus, it would seem that some of its longtime devotees are still skeptical. Whether dashing around town to multiple venues will make perennially grumpy editors and buyers any happier remains to be seen.
The crusade to remedy the circus that is New York fashion week continues today. WWD reports that the CFDA has teamed up with Ruth Finley’s Fashion Calendar in an attempt to create a less manic, more comprehensive NYFW schedule. The project, which will debut this February, endeavors to fix scheduling glitches (i.e., prevent the overlap of major shows) and help editors and buyers to better organize their weeks.
In related news, despite IMG’s announcement last week that it will be revamping NYFW by slashing its size and doing away with “unessential” attendees, Vera Wang, who’s been presenting at the tents since the beginning, has revealed today that she’ll be skipping Lincoln Center and showing at a yet-to-be-disclosed location. This comes on the heels of Carolina Herrera’s suggestion to The New York Times that she, too, may be abandoning the tents. Indeed, the CFDA and IMG’s efforts to repair NYFW are noble and much needed, but the fact remains that the schedule is grossly overstuffed, and the distracting crowds are making it harder and harder for industry professionals to do their jobs. Will these fixes be enough to restore designers’ loyalty to the established runway platform? Tune in this coming February to find out.
New It bags and It shoes regularly enter the fashion orbit, but this season’s unexpected must-have accessory is the humble—or not so humble—belt. Back in September, we clocked Céline’s Thanksgiving-appropriate pilgrim buckle on Anna Dello Russo, Giovanna Battaglia, and Elina Halimi, and noticed plenty of statement-making cinching on the Spring runways, too. Michael Kors, Haider Ackermann, and Tom Ford created a wasp-waist silhouette with classic men’s leather belts, while other designers assumed a more-is-more approach. Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz featured sweet cummerbunds decorated with bedazzled hearts; Peter Dundas sent out medallion-spangled bands worthy of a boxing champion at Emilio Pucci; and Vera Wang was snapped wearing an ultrawide style that swallowed up her entire torso.
