Joanne Reyes isn’t getting out much just now. As she prepares for her first-ever runway show this September, the Vicente Villarin designer has turned herself into a one-woman atelier, sketching, draping, pattern-making, cutting, and sewing every single dress she’s planning to send down the Bumble and bumble catwalk all by herself. “I’m pretty fast—like, this dress only took me about a day to make,” she says, pointing to a pleated goddess gown from her Spring collection. “But I’m really looking forward to a vacation.” Given the stunning dreaminess of her looks for Spring, Reyes seems unlikely to find herself with much free time on her hands in the coming months. Which may explain why she lit upon a travel theme as she conceived her Spring ’09 clothes. “I was looking at photos of the great cathedrals. What struck me the most was the stained glass—the way the glass is cut together to fit, and how the light passes through the panels, shifting the colors.” Thus, the Vicente Villarin gowns for Spring feature lots of layered sheers, a jewel-box palette brushing through soft pastels, and, in the jaw-dropping gown due to close the show, lots and lots of geometrically stitched-together silk chiffon panels. “I haven’t sewn that one yet,” Reyes says. “I’m guessing it’s going to be some work.”
