The windows of Ferragamo’s Fifth Avenue store were boarded up last night, but a few editors were allowed inside for a preview of the revamped two-floor flagship, which reopens to the public at 10 a.m. today. A label rep explained that the store’s 13-week renovation was an attempt to align its aesthetic with that of its creative director, Massimiliano Giornetti, who was appointed in 2010, and to create a proper setting for the brand’s full line of ready-to-wear. Overall, the 20,000-square-foot space (which is Ferragamo’s largest, both in size and in revenue) has taken on a warm, more residential look compared to the previous stark white facade, with walnut wood floors, Venetian plaster, marble tabletops, and bamboo stone. Table sculptures and glass lamps were flown in from Italy, and the books that filled the bookshelves were curated by Giornetti himself. He wasn’t the only one to inject his personal touch. Wanda Ferragamo, Salvatore’s 90-year-old widow and the label’s steward (she still reports to Ferragamo’s palazzo headquarters daily), has taken a hands-on approach to the flagship’s redesign. She should be very pleased.
