Three’s a Trend: Branching Out

-------

Branched Couture looks from Valentino, Maison Martin Margiela, and Zuhair Murad At the Fall ’13 Couture shows, a trio of houses uprooted the bright and breezy blossoms we’ve seen of late (just take a look through the recent Resort ’14 and menswear shows, and you’ll see what we’re talking about) for a more subdued, somewhat edgier take on flora: branch and stem motifs.

Zuhair Murad printed leafless twigs across a number of dramatic gowns (above, right), evoking a pop-noir winter wonderland of sorts. In its chimerically zany collection of repurposed vintage, Swarovski spikes, and yet more Kanye-favored face masks, Maison Martin Margiela showed a fuchsia column overlaid with embroidered wildflower stems (above, center). And, lastly, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli produced a dazzling cosmos of natural-world-inspired wares at Valentino. Here, it was coral that reached around heavy brocade (above, left) and crawled up silk insets. Sure, coral is technically fauna, but its sinewy offshoots are branches nonetheless.

Karl And His Body Double, And More of Today’s Top Stories

-------

Karl Lagerfeld got waxed. Germany’s oldest waxwork museum, Panoptikum Hamburg, is paying tribute to their nation’s finest, Lagerfeld included, by turning them into eccentric wax figures. Lagerfeld’s was unveiled to the public last week (pictured), interestingly placed between Pope Benedict XVI and the German prostitute Domenica. [Telegraph]

Jennifer Lopez has a new man: Zuhair Murad. The pop singer has tapped the Beirut-based designer to create looks for her summer concert tour, including a feathered skirt, a body suit, and several short dresses. This is not the first time Lopez and Murad have worked together—the singer wore one of Murad’s gown to the 2011 Met Gala and the Academy Awards. [WWD]

Could Michael Jackson be the subject of the Met’s Costume Institute exhibition in 2014? Sources say maybe. The exhibit has the potential to be a hit, since Jackson was known for his iconic costumes, including Swarovski-encrusted gloves and looks from Balmain, Tom Ford, and Givenchy. [Hintmag.com]

The collaboration between H&M and Maison Martin Margiela has been confirmed. The Paris-based design house will produce a one-off collection that will go on sale November 15. “This collaboration will be a great and memorable fashion moment,” said H&M creative director Margareta van den Bosch. [WWD]

The wild things are descending upon Soho. The author of the children’s classic Where the Wild Things Are, Maurice Sendak, is the subject of a retrospective on display through September 3. The collection on view includes several of the author’s stories from the Little Bear series to his The Nutcracker drawings. [Art Info]

Yea, Nay, or Eh: Miley Cyrus in Zuhair Murad at the Academy Awards

-------

Listen, we know Ms. Cyrus wrote a song in a nominated cartoon—sorry, animated feature—about a runaway dog or something, but don’t you think that’s an awfully big dress for someone to be wearing who doesn’t really have a reason to be at the Oscars in the first place? There’s just a lot going on with that outfit. You’ve got the tiers, the seashell belt, the jewel encrusting…we mean, the bling goes on. And while Miley pulled of the princess look better than others on the red carpet (ahem, Sarah Jessica), we still think it was a bit over the top. Are we behind the times? Is she totally working it? Do we need to watch more Hannah Montana to get down with it? Tell us.
