Built out of necessity to create cheap living spaces after the widespread destruction of the war, Berlin has many plattenbauten—buildings made out of large prefabricated slabs of concrete. Until the Berlin Wall came down, all new construction postwar was done in this style, particularly for social housing projects.

Even though most of them look ugly at first glance, especially in contrast to the surviving prewar buildings that are still very common in Berlin, some have a strange kind of beauty to offer.
