You can open as many Prada stores as you want, and you can have as many women wandering around in elegant Alaïa dresses and Kirkwood heels, but let’s be honest here for a second: Can a capital really be counted as a fashion capital if it doesn’t have its own edition of Vogue?
In the cold, harsh reality of daylight, it obviously shouldn’t matter, but in the colder, harsher reality of a fashion victim, it does.
It has almost been two years since Romee Strijd, Ymre Stiekema, and Josefien Rodermans (styled by the talented Marije Goekoop and photographed by the amazing Marc de Groot) graced the cover of Vogue Netherlands‘ first issue. From then on, everyone’s favorite style bible was on a roll, and has managed to find its own (Dutch) identity.
“We’ve changed a lot in the last two years, and like any other Vogue, we have managed to find our own identity. We celebrate luxury, fashion, and other beautiful things in the world, in a bold, playful, and surprising way. At the same time, we keep it real and try to be reachable. That’s why we connect fashion with art, literature, and culture…so at the end of it, it’s not about buying the clothes, but about getting inspired,” explains Karin Swerink, editor in chief of Vogue Netherlands.
For the July/August issue, which will be available starting tomorrow, the magazine tapped the Polish fashion model Malgosia Bela (who appeared on advertising campaigns for houses such as Lanvin, Louis Vuitton, Jil Sander, Valentino, and Versace) for the cover. Photographed by Annemarieke van Drimmelen, this editorial (and the issue in general) seems to capture the real essence of a Dutch fashion woman: down-to-earth but with a dose of attitude, a hint of courage, a dollop of intelligence, and, most of all, excellent taste.
“Annemarieke is a talented photographer, one who I’ve always supported and plan to support in the future. The reason behind this is the fact that she has her own style, that way she contributes something unique and, most of all, fresh,” explains Martien Mellema, creative director of the magazine.
And, of course, like every other fashion capital, Vogue Netherlands will host an annual Fashion’s Night out, which will be held on Thursday, September 4. Stay tuned.
