Michael Elmenbeck, founder of Bon magazine, is the initiator and cocurator of the much-talked-about exhibition Swedish Fashion: 2000-2015, currently on display at Sven-Harrys Konstmuseum, in Stockholm.
What made you put this show together?
I have long felt the desire for an exhibition that put Swedish fashion in a cultural perspective and also visually told the story of the amazing development during the last fifteen years. An exhibition that explained how a new generation took height, found self-expression, and, as a group, created what is today defined as Swedish fashion. The aim for the exhibition is that I simply want to highlight all the amazing creativity in the Swedish fashion world.
How did you convince the show space and Sven-Harry Karlsson, most known for showing Swedish artists, to put on a show about fashion?
The director of the museum actually likes fashion and was very happy when I suggested this. Now she and the board are even happier, since it turned out to be a huge success.
What is your favorite piece from the exhibition, and why?
Can I say the whole group of black clothes? If not, I choose the amazing jacket by Bea Szenfeld (below) that was made for Björk when she was awarded the Polar Music Prize. It’s the perfect combo of fashion and art, and it’s very sexy.
