I recently stopped by my friend Zana Bayne’s studio, and I was blown away by how far she has come in such a short period of time. There was never any doubt that she is very talented. I met her a couple of years ago at a Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition in Berlin, where she was living at the time, after relocating from San Francisco. I remember seeing all the cool kids in NYC with these harnesses that were minimal, edgy, and fresh, and I found out that it was her work. Funny that I would ultimately meet her in Berlin, not New York. We quickly became friends, and I would visit her in her studio/apartment in Brooklyn. She no longer works out of her apartment, and now has an atelier in the Garment District and has collaborated with everyone from Victoria’s Secret to Prabal Gurung. Zana has recently expanded her line to include handbags, which I fell in love with on sight. I have no doubt that this is just the beginning.
