An hour south of Lisbon, on Portugal’s West Coast, is the tiny, picturesque village of Comporta, long a weekend getaway for the capital’s elite. It was there that my family and I recently spent our holiday at the Sublime Comporta, the area’s first luxury hotel. We had the rare chance to experience the property before its official opening in July.

Comporta is what Saint-Tropez used to be forty years ago: a small fishing village on the brink of discovery by international jet-setters. Surrounded by a landscape of dunes, rice paddies, and olive orchards. The brainchild of husband-and-wife team Patrícia and Gonçalo Pessoa, the Sublime Comporta offers a country house’s rooms decked out in chic furnishings by Gervasoni.

“We wanted our guests to feel immediately at home, so the atmosphere is tranquil, elegant, and comfortable,” explained Gonçalo, who worked with local architect Alberto Charrua to create the hotel’s sleek interiors, which include pristine white curtains and bed linens. The Sublime’s restaurant offers a light Mediterranean menu, with many of the ingredients picked by the owners themselves from their organic garden. The property also includes a large outdoor pool, as well as a spa featuring a sauna, steam bath, massage room, and indoor pool.

The days in Comporta seem very unhurried, with people spending most of their time lounging on the beach. Not surprisingly, it has become a destination among individuals looking to get away from their hectic schedules. Jacques Grange, Christian Louboutin, and Farida Khelfa all own homes there. There are also a handful of restaurants overlooking the beaches. Two of my favorites are Sal Comporta and the Praia do Pego, where local cheeses are followed by plates of calamari, clams, and delicious sea bass, all freshly caught that day in the Atlantic.
