Majorca is where I go to check out and recharge. Two friends of mine, fellow Swedes Johanna and Michael Landstrom, fell in love with the beach town fifteen years ago. Inspired and infatuated by the mid-century architecture, they modernized two buildings and opened incomparably charming hotels: Portixol Hotel in Palma and (more recently) Hotel Esplendido in Puerto de Sóller.

Portixol Hotel is low-key and easy. My boys and I make use of the hotel’s bikes and take quick rides to the center of town and the incredible cathedral. We spend our first few days enjoying the green island views and slipping into a vacation haze before heading to Puerto de Sóller, a few miles away.

The translation “splendid” is an understatement if there ever was one; a stay at Hotel Esplendido ensures absolute nirvana. Puerto de Sóller’s old-world charm and postcard-quality scenery make it one of the most peaceful destinations in Europe, and there is no more relaxing place to watch the sailboats with a glass of Rioja than Esplendido’s pool deck. Located steps from the water, this hotel has a vibe that is a bit sporty. While visiting last weekend, my family and I went paddleboarding and did yoga on the boards.

The Landstroms have maintained the retro feeling of both places and upgraded them in the most perfect ways—plush bedding, views of the water, and to-die-for breakfasts. Each room is classically comfortable, with a Scandinavian touch. We can’t wait to go back in August.
