Donald Judd has always been a major influence for me—ever since I saw his work on a field trip to the Whitney when I was 13. What strikes me as I get older is not just his powerful sculptures but his entire life. He loved to be in the country, he was devoted to his family, he obsessed over interiors, and he appreciated simple, direct design. His furniture looks really good at this moment, and it’s motivating our team of furniture designers at Friends x Family. When Judd finally had enough of New York, of course, he moved to Marfa. But his house on Mercer Street has just been restored, and it’s an impressive testament to the man.
