Josie Maran is the girl next door—you know, the girl next door who was discovered at the age of 12 at a friend’s barbeque, became a model, got contracts with Maybelline and Guess?, appeared in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, showed up in a Backstreet Boys video, was digitalized for the Need for Speed: Most Wanted video game, and acted in Van Helsing and The Aviator. Anyway, she’s now the eco-conscious girl next door. After giving birth to daughter Rumi in her backyard last year—”I practice what I preach”—the model mom has been juggling motherhood and the launch of an eponymous line of natural, non-toxic cosmetics that’s scheduled to hit shops in September. (At this rate, she may even atone for having shown up in a Backstreet Boys video.) We asked Maran to share her tips on staying green.
When It Comes to Water
Instead of buying bottled water, I always try to reuse my own bio plastic water container.
Moisturizing
Josie Maran Cosmetics Argan Oil is my favorite moisturizer for skin, hair, and nails. It’s a 100 percent organic wonder. It’s packaged in a recyclable glass bottle and is purchased from women’s cooperatives in Morocco. These cooperatives also work within a UNESCO biosphere reserve, which ensures the protection and reforestation of argan trees.
In the Kitchen
I try to use as many organic ingredients as possible and then throw all food waste into a bucket designated for compost. With compost, you can have homegrown soil for your garden and feel good about reducing and reusing waste.
Laundry
My daughter loves getting messy. Instead of bleach, I use citrus on stains. Just rubbing and rinsing with a lemon or lime followed by a little drying time in the sun does the trick.
With a Baby
The average baby uses approximately 6,000 diapers before potty training. I use gDiapers—or “hybrid diapers,” as I like to joke. They have removable inserts that biodegrade when flushed.
For Easy Style
My boyfriend, Ali Alborzi, has a clothing line called Evidence of Evolution. They make the coolest dresses and shirts for women, plus shirts and hoodies for men. They’re locally designed and sewn in Los Angeles—they even have an organic line—and will be selling at Barneys this fall.
For a Big Night Out
When I hit the town—in an eco-limo for special events, or just carpooling with friends—I dress up my look with Finger Paints, a compact with four shades of color in it, from my line.
Lights Out
Legna sheets are so silky and soft you will never want to leave your bed. This relatively new fiber is made from wood grown in managed forests in Italy.
