Though it did hold the title of "America’s Fattest City" for a brief stint, Philadelphia is looking increasingly svelte and stylish these days. The "sixth borough" is reinventing itself as a destination for fashion and art. Case in point: A Passion for Perfection, the inaugural exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s new Joan Spain Gallery for Costume and Textiles at the Ruth and Raymond G. Perelman Building, which opens on September 15. The show draws on the museum’s extensive collection of clothing and textiles and focuses on three homegrown design heroes—James Galanos, Gustave (Gus) Tassell, and Ralph Rucci—highlighting how each created his own interpretation of American style by applying haute couture techniques to ready-to-wear. The exhibit alone is worth the trip to Philly, but if you find yourself hankering for some shopping after perusing the gowns that Grace Kelly, Jackie Kennedy, and Nancy Reagan wore, check out some of some of our favorite local boutiques:
