Fulco Santostefano della Cerda, Duke of Verdura, a.k.a. Fulco di Verdura, got his start as a textile designer for Coco Chanel. It’s not his fabrics that he’s remembered for, though, but his extravagant jewels, including the 1935 Maltese Cross cuffs that Coco herself wore with almost everything. As one of the most in-demand jewelers of the twentieth century, he created nature-inspired pieces that were worn by gem-loving women such as Joan Crawford, Nan Kempner, and Diana, Princess of Wales. Starting today, many of his masterpieces, including this clamshell compact (above), which he designed for an anonymous client as a memento of a summer romance, will go on display in “Verdura: The Life and Work of a Master Jeweler,” at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Also part of the exhibit are Coco’s cuffs, Greta Garbo’s curb-link watch bracelet, and Clare Booth Luce’s Tragedy and Comedy Masks brooch. For more information, see www.hmns.org.
