just like a woman

“All women are the same. We have one big secret: We give life, and then we have to deal with men,” said Diane von Furstenberg last night at her Meatpacking District store. She was greeted by applause from the room full of mostly women at American Express’ exclusive event for Platinum and Centurion cardholders. The designer and business entrepreneur was in conversation with InStyle’s Hal Rubenstein about the nature of fashion, her life, and upcoming collections. But despite her many successes, von Furstenberg’s tone was disarmingly modest. While introducing one of her evening dresses, she told the audience, “I turned that upside down and rolled it into a ball” after she wore it in Beijing, where she was presented with the Best International Designer award during the city’s fashion week. We asked her how she liked the fast-developing Chinese capital. “It was like witnessing ancient Egypt during the pharaohs—the buildings, the scale—I loved it.”
