repetto after me

The longevity of brands is sometimes a mystery, but as far as Phillip Lim is concerned, it’s not too hard to discover Repetto’s secret to aging gracefully: comfort. “They’re like socks for the street,” the designer mused at last night’s celebration of Repetto’s 60th anniversary at New York’s Max Lang gallery. Lim wasn’t the only fashion star who came to pay his respects to the legendary French dancewear company—Thom Browne, Charlotte Ronson, Jessica Stam, and Alexander Wang were among the crowd taking in the displays of reinterpreted Repetto classics. Proenza boys Jack and Lazaro put a gold coating on the lace-up skimmers once favored by Serge Gainsbourg; Waris Ahluwalia carved the same style out of marble. But the Repetto shoe reworked most frequently was the Cinderella—the original ballet flat created by Rose Repetto expressly for Brigitte Bardot and worn by the actress in “And God Created Woman.” Vanessa Beecroft splashed a lily-white pair in paint that looked like blood. Chloë Sevigny put a platform on her pair; Colette’s Sarah Lerfel opted for Air Max soles. Ever the iconoclast, Helmut Lang reinterpreted the Repetto shoe box. All told, a total of 60 artists, designers, models, actors, and other notables donated their time and talents to the little ballet brand from the Rue de la Paix; their creations will be auctioned off by UNESCO in October, with proceeds going to the newly launched Repetto Foundation.
