seriously now

Last night’s Hugo Boss show at Berlin’s Tempelhof International Airport, one of the world’s oldest continuously operating airfields, was geared to set up the city as a new departure point for international design. But as the first official event of Mercedes-Benz’s second Berlin fashion week, Bruno Pieters’ collection of uniformed men and women charging down the runway in black-watch caps, jackknife-thin ties, and a palette that ranged from black to navy, all set to a pounding beat, had us wondering if German aesthetics weren’t caught in a particularly bad patch of turbulence. Whether it was intended as parody or theater wasn’t clear, but a laughing Ellen von Unwerth, who shot local model Eva Padberg for the massive Mercedes-Benz ad campaign gracing the city, had this to say from her front-row seat: “The show was very, very German. Everyone, from the models to all the people in the audience, were so serious!”
