More than 100 designers, from John Galliano and Vera Wang to Christopher Kane and Stephen Jones, took Swarovski up on its invitation to create one-of-a-kind bridal gowns and accessories using Crystallized Swarovski Elements, and yesterday, throngs of fashion fans showed up to review the results at the magnificent eighteenth-century Hôtel de la Monnaie on Paris’ Left Bank. “They offered carte blanche,” said Martin Grant. “So I went for a chandelier hoodie.” Other entries from all over the fashion map included a calla lily dress by Frank Zambrelli, creative director for Leiber, and an Art Deco-inspired gown made by Jenny Packham, who estimated the number of crystals she used at close to 200,000. Stephen Todd, the branding and image consultant who originated the project with Nadja Swarovski, said, “It all started with the idea of doing a book on multicultural weddings and creating modern dream frocks.” The original plan was then expanded to include bed linens, wedding invitations, shoes, and cutlery. The venture produced a lavish coffee-table book as well as a full-blown exhibit that is scheduled to land in New York this spring (at a venue to be confirmed) before moving on to Japan.
