Once upon a time, the French graffiti artist Fafi dreamed of creating her own cosmetics collection. One chance meeting with MAC later, her fantasy has been transformed into reality. “Everything went so smoothly, it was like a knife into butter,” she said of the collaboration, which began with a rendezvous in New York City that, a mere 48 hours later, resulted in a request to create artwork for a Fafi for MAC collection. She’s come up with three cartoon heroines—Eriko, Ermine, and Monoka—each of which were inspired by indie American comics. The trio will be reproduced not just on MAC’s makeup packaging but on apparel, accessories, and even namesake Fafinette dolls. “I’ve been painting them since 1994,” says Fafi, who first drew her damsels on the inner-city walls of her hometown of Toulouse. “They shouldn’t be alone any longer.”
