Wayne

The aviatrix theme of Wayne Lee’s Fall ‘08 collection was played out in subtle details: a layered sheath cut from gossamer thin parachute silk, a leather bomber with a military cut. “It was inspired by Beryl Markham and her adventures flying across Africa in the forties,” the designer explained. Reinforcing the come-fly-with-me theme was the entertainment at her Friday afternoon presentation: Key Appleseed, a guitar-strumming, leather helmet and goggles-wearing folk singer Lee met on the L train. “I asked him to play and he said he’d love to,” she said. He wasn’t wearing the leather helmet when they met, though. “He bought that on eBay after I told him the theme of the collection!” For anyone who wants to hear more Appleseed, he can be found at the First Avenue station late at night. We can’t promise he’ll be wearing the helmet, though.
