New York fashion week is always a frenzied time, but anyone with a moment to spare should pencil in a rendezvous with Madame Alix Grès, the seminal designer who has at one time or another influenced everyone from Bill Blass to Zac Posen. “The Mysterious Madame Grès: Sphinx of Fashion,” opening February 2 at the Museum at FIT, will showcase over 70 of the couturiere’s masterpieces, including garments culled from the wardrobes of Doris Duke, Diana Vreeland, and Mrs. William Randolph Hearst. In addition to her oft-cited Grecian-inspired gowns (worn by the likes of Jackie Kennedy and Marlene Dietrich), expect to see lesser known yet equally influential sculptural pieces and sixties- and seventies-era “at home” designs, like Ms. Vreeland’s silk crepe pajamas. “Her clothes had both a somewhat classical as well as a very modern take on dressing,” the museum’s deputy director, Patricia Mears, explains. “At the same time, they’re just so beautifully rendered.” Mears, who has authored a titular tome in conjunction with the exhibit, summed up Grès’ enduring appeal: “When you have modernity, you have freedom and you have beauty in one package. I think it’s easy to see why certain designers would be enamored by that.”
