a whole different ballgame

Roger Federer may be the darling of the fashion set, but at the Brooklyn exhibition space for The Journal, Williamsburg's premier art publication, curators Aaron Rose and Emma Reeves have tuned into basketball, not tennis, by recruiting 22 artists to create "Being True," a Nike-sponsored ode to basketball's style, grace, and urban authenticity. Paying homage to the sport's legendary 1985 slam dunk contest, in which Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins demonstrated "the dunk" at its most divine, the artists chart how basketball has inspired fashion, art, music, and cultural movements. "I think anything that applauds youth thinking for themselves and being responsible for their actions is amazing," says Poppy de Villeneuve, who has photographs of young fans in the show. " 'Being true' can mean so many different things. I didn't grow up watching basketball, so I'm also learning a lot through this show. But the excitement towards sports in this country is infectious." As is the artistic energy on display in "Being True."
