Given the size of the crowd that turned out for the launch party kicking off Gen Art's 13th Annual Film Festival, presented by Acura, Diesel's cavernous Soho store seemed an ideal venue. Away from the masses in a lower-level quasi-VIP area, Ian Gerard, Gen Art's founder and CEO, discussed the vetting process: whittling approximately 1,000 entries into seven feature and seven short-film slots. "It's a pretty difficult competition," he said. "The committee's made up of film enthusiasts who mimic our consumer. It's not about movie snobs or people who take themselves too seriously. We're really an audience-driven festival." With that egalitarian spirit in mind, anyone can purchase tickets to the New York premieres (and after-parties), which run from April 2 through 8. So what did juror Alicia Witt reveal about her picks this year? "I haven't actually watched all of them yet," the "Law & Order" actress admitted. "I'm also a singer and songwriter, and I just played the Cutting Room on Saturday, so it's been busy. I'll definitely be cramming the next couple of days!"
