Just minutes before their first on-calendar fashion show on Saturday, Kaito Hori and Iku Furudate, the duo behind the Paris-based label Commuun, appeared completely rested. “This season’s inspiration came from a group of 1930’s portraits I saw by the Polish artist Helmar Larski,” said Hori. “They depict faces from all different angles, and the artist’s methods of contrasting light and shadow parallel the dynamic contrast we explore in the layering and volume of our clothes.” The 30-year-olds (he graduated from FIT, she from Central Saint Martins) are on a roll: Last season, the couple won ANDAM’s LVMH and Longchamp prize for their summer ‘08 collection; for Fall, they are moving their minimalist approach into color and layers of transparency. “He comes up with the concepts and the first ideas, and I start more with draping,” said Furudate. Added her partner, “It’s the mix of fabrics that makes textures interesting.”
