touched by an angel

That Farrah Fawcett once compelled droves of disco-era young women to feather their hair and don clingy poly blends shouldn’t come as much of shock. But Cathy Horyn’s revelation regarding the actress at a Met-sponsored blog panel on Sunday might surprise you. “I got the idea for ‘On the Runway’ in August of 2006 while watching the Emmys,” the New York Times critic and blogger told the audience. “The original Charlie’s Angels were on the stage, and I thought, there are things that you want to say that don’t require a full-length article—you really want to make comments.” In conjunction with the Met’s “Blog.mode: Addressing Fashion” exhibition and online forum, Horyn, the Sartorialist’s Scott Schuman, and A Shaded View on Fashion’s Diane Pernet all discussed their respective endeavors with Costume Institute curator Harold Koda. Schuman conceded that he had some reservations before embarking on his new career. “I came up with the name ‘The Sartorialist’ a year before. I figured if the blog was just an embarrassment, no one would know it was me.” No worries there.
