Simon

Barneys creative director Simon Doonan arrived in L.A. yesterday to fête the launch of his fourth literary effort to date, “Eccentric Glamour: Creating an Insanely More Fabulous You.” The 268-page book, which heralds the nonconformist style of women like Isabella Blow and Tilda Swinton, also elaborates on the disadvantages of dressing down. Not that the guests who lined up for an opportunity to meet the best-selling author needed any such pointers (this is Beverly Hills, after all). In between signing copies, Doonan divulged plans to remain SoCal bound this weekend, visiting apartments in which he used to live close to 30 years ago. “Over the course of eight years I lived in nine different buildings,” he confessed. “I was young and mad, and if I’d had money and fame I would’ve been exactly like Britney Spears, I promise you!” Four hours later, the department store was the scene of another party, this one hosted by Jason Schwartzman in honor of Scott Sternberg and his label, Band of Outsiders. “It’s our first-ever clambake,” announced Barneys fashion director and Texas native Julie Gilhart, before asking, “What is a clambake, anyway?” Off she went amid a sea of plastic lobsters, crabs, and sea urchins, only to return a few moments later with the answer: “OK, it’s an East Coast kind of thing—prepster meets hipster.” The same could’ve been said for the guest list, as Sternberg greeted loyal fans and then some including Roman Coppola, Bret Easton Ellis, Roman Alonso, Jacqui Getty, and Scwhartzman mère Talia Shire. “I don’t know what it means to be a good host, but I do know what it means to really love a brand like Band of Outsiders,” noted Schwartzman en route to the dinner table. At which point Shire discreetly turned around to address her son and say, “That’s what makes the best host, anyway.”
