Viewers often try to trace artists' biographies or personalities through their work, but few genres offer such compelling and confusing insights as self-portraits. "They function as mirrors that transform an artist's image through filters created at particular phases of individual practices," explains New York art dealer James Fuentes. "Self-portraits are among the ultimate relics in an artist's oeuvre." In "Self-Portraits 1966-2008," Fuentes has compiled a survey of works created by ten of the most interesting and appealing contemporary artists. Among the pieces are a contemplative screen-print by Andy Warhol, a series of lush yet nightmarish images by Lucas Samaras, and an Egon Schiele-like portrait of Alfredo Martinez suffering during a 55-day prison hunger strike after he was incarcerated for forging Basquiat paintings. Also featured is a self-portrait by Rita Ackermann, who has personified artistic cool since the nineties, when her images of feral nymphets made her a New York downtown icon.
