walking on sunshine

Erotokritos, the Paris-based Greek Cypriot whose colorful designs are beloved of Kate Moss, opened the inaugural Cyprus Fashion Week to the unanimous approval of front-row shipping heiresses and sundry international press. CFW put its best foot forward kicking off with Erotokritossome of the subsequent collections exhibited on the lesser "Catwalk B" showed little chance of ever transcending their second-division status. But Cypriot designers are more influential on the international fashion scene than some might think. Kika Ioannidou, formerly of Emanuel's, the designers of Princess Diana's wedding dress, put her meringue hell well and truly behind her with an Art Deco-inspired collection in velvet and wool, above. Asked whether observers can expect to see a common thread running through the fashion week collections, Ioannidou, in her capacity as chairperson of the Cyprus Association of Fashion Designers, said, "Cypriot designers have all grown up in the glorious sunshine. Consequently, a lot of the colors we use are brighter than bright." Sounds like front-row sunglasses might be justified.
