On Saturday night, just as the Fifth Berlin Biennale was getting under way, the city's fashion-art magazine 032c celebrated the opening of its new museum store-cum-office in Berlin-Mitte. Designed by Konstantin Grcic, the new space will host a revolving series of exhibitions. First up was the art collective Slavs and Tatars, who showcased a sampling of their polemical text-based works on paper, which ranged from posters proclaiming "You Let Us Steal/We Let You Live" and other enigmatic geopolitical slogans to maps that rewrite the history of the world from a Eurasian perspective. "Our mission is to highlight a part of the world that no one thinks about," explained Payam Sharifi, co-founder, with Kasia Korczak, of the collective. "We define Eurasia as the area of the world east of the Berlin Wall and west of the Great Wall of China. Ideologically, we embrace a sort of Russian/Slavic fatalism.You try your best knowing that you will fail." Failure, however, doesn't seem to be in the cards for the Slavs and Tatars; New York's Museum of Modern Art recently acquired a selection of the group's work.
