the devil inside...the gallery
How ever many words a picture might be worth, pictures can fail to tell an accurate story. Media images are so abundant and sensational that few resonate in our memories. In "Lucifer's Greatest Work of Art," which opened this week at the Leipzig branch of London's trend-setting FRED gallery, artists Jake and Dinos Chapman, Cathy de Monchaux, co-curator Dolly Thompsett, and others take contemporary news stories as the source material for an updated form of "history painting"the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century genre in which artists criticized or exaggerated contemporary political events and personalities by comparing them to mythological figures or iconic moments in history. At FRED, the artists use references to "Star Wars," jigsaw puzzles, and the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy to demonstrate how easily mythologized, simplified, and abstracted are the complex realities we face today. The show continues until June 22.
