kenzo in the amazon

When Sao Paulo fashion week was searching for a guest of honor for its Japanese-themed Spring ‘09 edition, retired designer Kenzo Takada made perfect sense. He’s known for his exotic prints, ethnic inspirations, and vibrant color schemes, all of which are hallmarks of Brazilian design. Before SPFW he made a pit stop in the Amazon, especially significant given his long-term love affair with the jungle—his first label was called Jungle Jap, after all. After arriving, he acted as a visiting professor, giving a lecture on the lessons to be learned from his career’s history. Though he doesn’t speak Portuguese, the appeal of SPFW wasn’t lost in translation. Takada observed that he “noticed a real sense of passion in the people and the shows.”
