mizz greenpoint ukuleles to the top

This past weekend was the first annual Mizz Greenpoint (that’s in Brooklyn, for our out-of-town readers) contest, and the competition was fierce. Hayden-Harnett co-founder Toni Hacker, whose art director, Madeleine “Mimi” Eayrs, was in the running for the title (with a little help from HH apparel designer Laurel Wells) reports.
The Mizz Greenpoint pageant, sponsored by Brooklyn Glamour at the East Coast Aliens art/film space on Franklin Street, turned out to be a packed house. The room was hot, the contestants hotter, and the drinks icy cold. Eric Majorelles and Kathleen Hennerty, the event coordinators/gracious hosts, made sure everything ran smooth as buttah, and the dreamy, slightly swoony electro-cabaret band Something in Spanish made everyone feel a little bit in love.
Greenpoint girls are certainly surprising in their talents: They challenge a burly dude to a pie-eating contest, recite naughty limericks, sing ballads about the neighborhood while accompanying themselves on the ukulele, and solve Rubik’s cubes while hula-hooping (that’s our Mimi!). A hushed silence fell over the sweating crowd as the winners were being announced. All the HH’ers were standing together, nervous and expectant. Then we heard: “First runner-up goes to…Mimi Eayrs!” YES!! “And the winner of Mizz Greenpoint 2008 is… Ellia Bisker!” Yea!! Ellia stole all hearts with her ukulele strumming and her funny and poignant ballad “Greenpoint.” After the announcements, all the contestants headed out the door laughing and smiling in their costumes. That’s fierce uncompetition…and that’s very Mizz Greenpoint.
